  • Peaceful site on a farm a 15-minute drive from Malham, North Yorkshire
  • Scaleber Force Waterfall 15 minutes’ drive; Skipton half an hour
  • Within Yorkshire Dales National Park; dogs welcome; resident animals
Crakemoor Campsite sits on the southern fringes of Yorkshire Dales National Park, sandwiched between two areas of outstanding natural beauty (Nidderdale to the east and Forest of Bowland to the south west). And you know what that sweet location means: epic walks. Your dog (who is welcome here) will thank you for it – or at least be wagging its tail in approval. The family-friendly site sits on a working farm that’s absolutely peaceful – and also pretty remote: it’s a 15-minute drive to the village of Malham, which has a couple of traditional pubs (serving food), plus a visitors’ centre with friendly staff who will help you find your way around the Yorkshire Dales. This is wild camping at its best, with pitches on vast grassy fields (where you can make friends with the resident animals, which include sheep and cattle) and the spectacular scenery of North Yorkshire all around you. Basic facilities are available (there are portable toilets and showers, for example); however, please note that there is no drinkable water on site. Barbecues are allowed, and you can source provisions in the village or head to the market town of Settle (20 minutes’ drive) for a wider choice of supermarkets, eateries and drinking venues, plus a bike-hire place.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Remoteness was nice and with only 3 other campers it wasn’t very busy. Good toilet facilities.

Disliked: There is a wind turbine in the field next to the campsite. It was very loud due to high winds when we stayed.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The view is superb; fantastic location for walking and visiting nearby villages/towns. A good, level camping area; water supply for boiling water. Friendly hosting family.

Disliked: Take ear plugs, as the nearby wind turbine groans like my old knees.

Local attractions

Armed with leaflets and maps from Malham’s visitors’ centre, you can head into the Yorkshire Dales and explore sites like Scaleber Force Waterfall (15 minutes’ drive), which tumbles down over several moss-covered limestone steps; Janet’s Foss (20 minutes), a waterfall with a natural pool that’s a popular spot among wild swimmers; and Gordale Scar (20 minutes), a dramatic rocky ravine. Skipton (half an hour) has an exceptionally well-preserved medieval castle with a formidable entrance flanked by imposing towers. Take a boat trip cruising along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, constructed in the 18th century to facilitate movement of raw materials during the Industrial Revolution. The Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail (half an hour) takes you through splendid woodland to a limestone landscape that includes the Ingleborough Cave. Bring an extra cardigan if you decide to explore these subterranean passages (it’s chilly underground). Alternatively, climb the 700-odd metres to the summit of Ingleborough.
