  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Eco-friendly site with a nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. And it has a good mix of rural views too – this is a site that has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

Mitchell's Field powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Cannot express enough how lovely of a site this is. It has clean toilets and showers (and heated), its clearly all well looked after by the super friendly staff. The bar was really nice and also super cheap, we enjoyed spending our evenings there and doing the Saturday quiz also (although we were terrible!). The pizza van was a nice addition, its great you can get food onsite if you are feeling lazy; we enjoyed the pizza but the chips were very underdone sadly. Happy its adults only, made it all feel a lot more relaxed and peaceful.

We are a fairly young couple (early-mid 20s), and often we get a lot of looks or are not welcomed into sites by older people. We did not feel this here at all despite being some of the youngest customers onsite, and the staff were very helpful.

There is a small nature walk onsite but we did not get around to doing this. 20 mins drive to York and around an hour to Hull so great location, some of the nearby towns and villages looked nice when we drove through.

Will be coming again, already looking to come next month!

Disliked: Only some minor complaints; the wifi was not the best as it did not reach to the tent pitches (and there was no service). It would be great if it could be extended out to reach the tents.

The main negative would be the signage (that was in your face everywhere, for example on every toilet door) was very old fashioned and a little passive-aggressive regarding the "problems of a cashless society", which for people our age was surreal to look at. Was kind of off-putting, and in honesty, we don't go on holiday to be flooded with strange semi-political agendas. Say you prefer cash, fine, but the signs were a bit far in how they said it. I think this was the only thing that we thought was distasteful and made us turn our noses to the site slightly.

There is an army shooting range you can hear from the site, did not bother us but if you have a dog that gets scared easily you might want to reconsider. Not super loud though and fine enough.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Flaxton Meadows is one of the best sites we’ve visited. An amazingly warm welcome from Martin who couldn’t do enough to ensure our stay was the best it could be. Being adult only meant the site was peaceful. The electric hard-standing pitches are huge, well-spaced and level. The bar is great with very reasonably priced drinks and the pizza wagon is a fantastic addition. The pizza, garlic bread and fries we had were delicious. The washroom facilities were stunning. Designed in a Flaxton Boulevard fashion, with music; they were super clean and had everything you needed. Pot wash and clothes washing facilities also spot on. A lovely nature walk around the site is nice touch. We found the mini electric lawn mower-bots quirky; they also contributed to the calm atmosphere - no mower noise you can get at grassy sites. Can’t wait to return!

Disliked: Would be good if there were gluten-free options at the pizza wagon.
We couldn’t work the dog wash.

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
