  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey
When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The pitch was perfect for our stay, close to the Abbey, shops and cafes/ restaurants.
The field didn’t have a shower block but there were toilets and provision for emptying our Elsan toilet cassette.
The pitch was spacious and quiet.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: What a great view, we had a pitch on the edge of the field with only the sea in sight.
Only a short stroll into town with good food and drinks options.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The field is huge so no problem finding somewhere flat to park. Location to the abbey and Whitby is great, only 15 min walk into Whitby. People manning the gate were nice.

Disliked: Very, very basic. For £25 a night would expect a lot more toilets and somewhere with a hot water point/sink for the dishes. There's lots of sheep poo everywhere.

Liked: There was lots of space between each other campervans which we like so lots of privacy beautiful sea views

Disliked: They was not fully prepared for lots of people the electric kept tripping due to not enough generators but they did add another layer on that day but still not fantastic :-( the toilet facilities was not the best at all unfortunately we will not stop on this site again for that reason the man on the quad was somewhat helpful:-(

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Lovely views, spacious pitches, friendly welcome, nice staff, very close to 199 steps and Whitby Abbey

Disliked: Very noisy family nearby with toy machine guns being fired from 8am which parents allowed! Not the fault of the site itself granted.
Took over an hour to get on site at mid-day, suppose couldn’t be helped when everyone arrived together. Toilets terrible…for £38 a night with EHU a lock on the toilet door wouldn’t go amiss.

Nevertheless, I’d return for the views and location albeit expensive for limited facilities but you’re paying for the location.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Proximity to whitby

Disliked: Seen better toilet facilities on a building site. Very old, dirty portaloos. Expensive for what it is in my opinion. No showers, but does state this in booking blurb.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Great location right next to Whitby Abbey, didn't need to move the van all weekend. It is a decent walk down to the town with the steps!

Site kept clean with bins emptied regularly.

Disliked: Toilets are basic but we're kept clean, only cold water and no showers (I knew that when I booked), I did miss having a shower but fine for a weekend.

Was a bit of chaos when we arrive with a large queue to get in, not their fault though as everyone arrive at once!

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary. Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes). There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
