Farm campsite

  • Small family campsite at a working farm in the North York Moors
  • Thirsk and Helmsley both 15 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • Countryside views; walks to Rievaulx Abbey and Sutton Bank from site
It’s not often that you find a campsite with a gorgeous ruined abbey within walking distance, but Wethercote Farm Campsite is that rare beast. Surrounded by amazing open views, this relaxed and peaceful spot is an hour on foot from the atmospheric remains of Rievaulx Abbey. The camping pitches are located on the fields of a beef, sheep and arable farm fringing the North York Moors National Park. There’s always plenty going on in neighbouring fields and there are lots of animals around, including Herdwick lambs in spring and the resident farm dogs. Because of the other animals, your well-behaved canine companions are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Facilities around the camping fields include a shower and toilet block with hot running water, a washing-up shed and rubbish and recycling areas. Drinking water taps are scattered around the site and firepits are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The lovely market towns of Helmsley and Thirsk are both roughly 15 minutes’ drive away for stocking up on goodies from the supermarkets, and a short drive in pretty much any direction will lead you to a delightful country pub (often with a good food menu).

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice clean tidy campsite with good facilities. Well spaced pitches with easy access for cars and motorhomes.Lovely quiet rural location with amazing views. Perfect for anyone looking for a quiet break away.

Disliked: Toilet and shower could do with being in separate units. Wasnt happy with being told to not play music which was on very low volume

From the manager: Thank you so much for the kind review I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I'm sorry I had to tell you to turn the music off even though it wasn't loud, it is stated in our pitchup rules that we are indeed a peaceful site and as such no music is allowed and I have to keep the same rule for everyone so others can be guaranteed the enjoyment of such a quiet rural site. Thanks again and we hope to see you again sometime.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Everything!
The area was so lovely, the drive up was incredible with all the views. There was fire wood to purchase and we could use campfires on site with many available to choose from. Free WiFi on site with amazing connectivity.
There were fresh eggs at the front of the farm. The farm cat, and the farm dogs came to visit they were incredibly cute. They are dog friendly (On a lead at all times) which made it even better as we were able to bring our dog.

The hosts were very lovely and easy to keep in communication with if we needed anything. There are 2 toilets on site, one with a shower inside and another one on the far corner as a compost toilet (so cool!) there were washing up facilities onsite too.

There were many walks nearby for us to do.
We would definitely come again and stay longer

Liked: Views and walking paths

Disliked: Lack of facilities, 2 toilets 1 shower. Even though only two lots of campers on the site, there was still waiting.
Never saw anyone from the farm. Nevertheless it was great value for money if not just for the scenery.

Liked: Really good camp site in a beautiful location. The pitches are a really good size and the owners were very friendly. There was fresh eggs for sale as you enter the farm and the spring water from the drinking tap was really nice. Being on a working farm added to the experience and there were some good walks near by. Take in a trip to the quaint village of Helmsley and visit the Yorkshire gliding club just off Sutton Bank with some breathtaking views

Disliked: Wasn't anything to dislike

Local attractions

Wethercote Farm Campsite is a handy overnight stop for hikers on the Cleveland Way National Trail (15 minutes’ walk), and within a five-minute drive you are at the top of steep Sutton Bank for views of the mid-19th-century chalk Kilburn White Horse; on clear day you’ll also have panoramas right across the Vale of York. At the Sutton Bank National Park Centre (five minutes’ drive), there’s a café, small store and bike hire as well as lots of visitor information about this spectacular part of the world. You can walk to Rievaulx Abbey (an hour’s walk) for a wander around the lovely cloisters, and then move on to Rievaulx Terrace (another 20 minutes) for views back over the abbey grounds. York (50 minutes) is a treasure trove of history, from its Gothic Minster to the medieval cobbled street of The Shambles, lined with dinky souvenir shops. There’s more history to be discovered at Castle Howard (half an hour), the setting for many a TV drama, with tours of the house and gardens designed by John Vanbrugh. Thirsk has also had its moment of TV fame as home of ‘The Yorkshire Vet’ documentary series and The World Of James Herriot (15 minutes), with displays in a vet’s restored 1940s home and surgery – and for a day full of fun on adrenaline rides, head for Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes).
