  • Woodland wild glamping in the Howardian Hills National Landscape
  • Castle Howard five minutes’ drive; York 25 minutes
  • Wood-fired hot tub; communal barbecue; individual firepits
You too can rest like a Norse god (assuming, of course, that a Norse god rested like a boss…) at Odin’s Rest, a wild glamping site in the Yorkshire countryside. Incidentally, there’s a whole Viking legend associated with the name of the site, and the owners will be happy to share it with you. What else will they share with you? Let’s see: first of all, gorgeous views across the gently undulating forested landscape of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within which Odin’s Rest sits. Then, the peaceful ambience of their site, which consists of 15 acres of woodland and grassland (the latter in the process of being rewilded) that are regularly visited by local wildlife, including protected species. Accommodations are suitably distanced from each other, hence pleasantly private, though you might bump into your fellow guests at the communal barbecue (please bring your own cooking equipment); provisions can be sourced in nearby Strensall (10 minutes’ drive) or Malton (15 minutes), considered by many Yorkshire’s food capital. Other luxurious touches include a wood-fired hot tub (a top spot for a sunset soak accompanied by birdsong) and off-grid hot-water showers (biodegradable body wash and shampoo provided), plus your own private outdoor area with a firepit and picnic table. Drinking water is also available, as are composting toilets. What the site doesn’t have, though, is electricity, so be sure to come prepared with torches. Other things to pack include wellies: there is no tarmac here, and grassy paths might be muddy.

Local attractions

Vast and elegant Castle Howard (five minutes’ drive) is a stately home completed in the early 1800s and often seen in TV shows (including ‘Bridgerton’). It features an exquisite chapel decorated by William Morris, as well as expansive parkland dotted with fountains and follies. If you’re into modern history, Eden Camp Modern History Museum (15 minutes), on the site of a former prisoner-of-war site, brings the World War II experience to life with re-enactments and living-history events. War planes and Allied bombers are on display at the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial (25 minutes). Intrigued by the legend behind Odin’s Rest? Then a visit to the JORVIK Viking Centre in York (25 minutes), with its collection of Viking-era artefacts, is a must. Climb the 13th-century Central Tower at York Minster for views across the city, then stroll along the Shambles, an atmospheric cobbled street from the Middle Ages.

Liked: Absolutely brilliant spot, peaceful tranquil with superb views. This is a gem of a place so hidden away, it also has helpful and thoughtful hosts. The website and description are unable to portray the beauty of this site. Hot tub really great also under the night sky.
