  • Family-run park on the cliffs overlooking Runswick Bay beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitby; half an hour to Robin Hood's Bay
  • A short walk to the dog-friendly beach; adjacent to Cleveland Way
A break by the fabulous North Yorkshire coastline is always a good idea – and arguably even better when you manage to steer clear of the crowds and find yourself a quiet little tucked-away spot to stay in instead. That spot could well be Runswick Bay Caravan Park, a peaceful family-owned spot up on the cliffs overlooking the beach at Runswick Bay. Ever-popular Whitby is about 15 minutes’ drive south, so you’ll be able to visit it (and many other coastal hotspots) easily enough, but here it's all about the peace and quiet. Runswick Bay may not be on many visitors’ radar but it’s a lovely little spot with a dog-friendly sandy beach (with rockpools that kids often love) and a village that’s got a pub and café among its cluster of seaside cottages. You can stroll down to the beach in a few minutes from the park – but there’s also plenty of space on site for kids to play in the woods or ride bikes in the open spaces. In fact, everything has been nicely set up for easy family holidays here – the pitches are surrounded by trees to shelter them from coastal breezes, and there’s a good collection of shared facilities including a launderette, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and bathrooms with disabled access. There are lots of lovely walks to be done along this stretch of coastline – but those of you with more challenging hikes in mind may like to note that this park is on the route of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, and on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park.

What customers say

Great spot near Runswick Bay & Cleveland Way! Praised for clean facilities, friendly staff, spacious sites. Pub is a plus. Downsides: steep beach return, occasional wind/shower temp issues. Highly recommended, well-run.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Well laid out generously sized pitches in a large field.
Very well maintained washing up area, toilets, shower rooms, freezer ice pack facility.
Extremely well laid out site ‘rules’ that made sense and seemed fair.

Disliked Long walk to toilets and other facilities from pitches.
No apparent enforcement of the ‘rules’ e.g. “no ball games”.
No specific play area for children.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Although the camping field was busy, the pitches were well spaced, so didn't feel cramped. There was enough room between pitches for children to kick a football around without disturbing others. Nice and level, although due to the dry summer the ground was very hard.
For a pop up campsite, facilities were adequate. We only stopped the one night as this was first time camping with our grandchildren and daughter. Nothing has put them off, although we would probably use somewhere with more to do on site for the children .
Great location for Runswick Bay, although as others have said, if you can, take the car down to the beach - it is a VERY steep walk back up. The bottom car park does get busy so need to get down early. Also good for the other seaside locations along the coast.
Campsite easy to find , check-in easy with friendly receptionist. Understand the cash only situation if only open for a few weeks in summer.

Disliked Dogs! It's a pity people can't take their pooches elsewhere to walk and poop, especially where children are likely to be playing. Nothing the campsite owners can do I'm afraid.

There was a problem with the hot water when we were there which meant we didn't use the showers or were able to wash up using hot water, unless we boiled the kettle. The person cleaning apologised and said the plumber was coming out after the weekend. The toilet area was clean when we got there, although there was a lack of toilet rolls at first. My daughter commented that when she used the shower to wash the children's feet off she had to hold the control all the time which was a pain.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The area was nice close to beach and Cleveland way for a walk the hotel next to the site did lovely food we had a meal there and booked for breakfast next morning everything was spot on

Disliked The ground was quite hard to get the tent pegs in the toilet and bathroom facilities didn’t get cleaned enough if at all never saw anyone doing it there was cleaning products and cloths left so don’t know if we were expected to do it ourselves. The most annoying part was the showers they don’t stay on you have to keep pressing the button and they were cold didn’t get warm at all and another annoyance was we’d put ice packs and water bottles in freezer for next day and some kind person took some of them and swapped the iced ones for there’s that weren’t which isn’t the campsites fault but obviously the not so nice clientele!!

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This site is absolutely lovely. The owner was so welcoming and helpful, she found me a mallet as I forgot mine (der). The grounds were very tidy (no rubbish anywhere) lots of bins around the property. The ground was very soft which made pegging easy which was nice as I have bent so many of my pegs.
The showers were extremely clean and well lite.
This place was so nice I stayed an extra night.
Very well priced which i was surprised about given how lovely it is.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location great.
Facilities reasonable.
Friendly staff.

Disliked I realise it's a pop-up site, but fridges would be helpful given no electric hook up.
I do also appreciate you're relying on people clearing it out etc, but no shop for milk would mean could at least have a cuppa.

Tents and cars q close to one another.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location was good for Runswick Bay.

Disliked Too expensive considering there is no electric hook up and the facilities are very basic.
Toilet block needs a revamp, showers are very annoying, constantly having to press the button.

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a good idea here – either along the coast or out into the moors (Falling Foss waterfall, 25 minutes’ drive away, is a good place to aim for). For other fresh-air activities, you could go surfing in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (25 minutes' drive), follow the bike trails through Dalby Forest (45 minutes) or climb into the trees at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes). Whitby (15 minutes) is a must-visit, of course – to walk the 199 Steps, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and follow in Dracula’s footsteps at Whitby Abbey. A little way south, Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour) is also a great place to take a stroll, with fossil hunts and ghost walks as well as National Trust - The Old Coastguard Station to explore. More seaside time? How about a day out in Scarborough (45 minutes), with its Sea Life Centre, open-air theatre and Alpamare UK waterpark? Alternatively, mix up coast and moorland scenery with a heritage ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering.
