  • Spacious and peaceful eco-friendly site with scenic countryside views
  • A 10-minute drive from Ripon and 40 minutes from York
  • A 20-minute drive to Lightwater Valley; Europe's longest rollercoaster
Travelling up hills, down dales and across moors? Settle in for hols and pitstops at Venus Campsite, less than five minutes’ drive from the A1 and 10 minutes from the North Yorkshire city of Ripon. Whether sticking around for lengthy stays or taking an overnight pause on travels north or south, this is a top spot to pitch up at. Handily placed between the Yorkshire Dales (35 minutes' drive) and North York Moors (20 minutes) national parks, the site’s a good pick for ramblers, bikers, hikers and riders, and urbanites will be well-placed too with Ripon and York (40 minutes) within easy reach. The site’s eco credentials should appeal to environmental warriors and worriers too: it’s a recognised eco-friendly site, with plenty of green space to roam about in for guests, recycling facilities for sorting the detritus of getaways, and energy coming from renewables. Feeling hungry or thirsty? A handful of country pubs serve food within about 10 minutes' drive, lots more options can be tried in Thirsk (15 minutes away) and Ripon, and glasses can be raised at the Black Sheep Brewery within 20 minutes. For self-catered stays, there’s a small grocery store five minutes away, and bigger supermarkets in Thirsk. Please note that this is a back to basics campsite with simple facilities of flushing toilets and free hot showers – if you're in the market for luxuries like underfloor heating you'll probably need to look elsewhere.

What customers say

This adults-only campsite gets high marks for its peaceful vibe, spacious, level sites, and super clean facilities. Guests love the friendly owner, Sarah, and its easy access to the A1 for stopovers or exploring. Minor gripes: road noise and older showers.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked So peaceful, loved the fact it’s adult only. Facilities were great, toilet block was always clean which is a massive thing for us. Pitches were of a good size and for us, we loved the communication through text the day before rather than on the day. Made it much easier! Absolutely would definitely come back

Disliked Primative site. Over price for a basic, basic site. no real effort on its up keeping..
Enter by a combination lock on a chain, owner text's the number, i got 1991, which is wrong, if it wasnt for car behind waiting, could of been there for.....
I mean lock n key, most places have barrier or ANPR entry, well in this decade.
Lock n key omg
Grass pitches, uneven, unkept, bald to mud or weeds, grass needed cutting.
Dogs walking area is in better condition.
Place is absolute barren.
Motorway noise is relentless even at silly o' clock..
This place is stuck in the last century

Shower n toilets are portacabins, not ample enough for a site as big as this.
Need updating.

£27 for a night GWE, just to run a medical mini fridge.

For me, nothing is being put back into the site, but, owners got a lovely big house!!

I'd book elsewhere, give it a wide berth..

From the manager: Hi anonymous Peter Kerr

Basic basic is what we are and advertise as that, may be read site information before you book any where again.
Looking at your other review of the other camp site you stayed at I suggest you give up camping and stop being a tart arse and book a 5 star hotel that will accommodate your needs.
My wife (Sarah) came up to our nice house and did mention that your face didn’t crack a smile while talking to you on arrival, and she’s not wrong there.
Also I can assume that re the medical fridge you are on happy pills, may I suggest you double your dose at your not on enough. !!

Regards Sarah’s husband (Stan) 😂🤣

Pitches are level. soil is good for knocking in tent pegs

Powered grass campsite

Liked Very spacious plots. Lovely and clean. Never any queues for the toilets or showers. Not too far to walk to the facilities. Sheltered from the wind by hedges. A large bench table provided on the pitch saves on bringing your own. The owner is welcoming and lovely.

Disliked Be aware of light road noise during the night for anyone who is sensitive to noise. I dont mind as I live on a main rd so used to it. Its our third time staying and will be returning next year. Its well placed for visiting Fountain Abbey and Saltburn sea side only an hours drive.

Local attractions

History buffs will be well looked after hereabouts, with plenty to entertain, starting 25 minutes’ drive away at Mother Shipton’s Cave, England’s oldest tourist attraction. Plenty of stately manors are nearby too, with Newby Hall and Ripley Castle within 25 minutes, Beningbrough Hall and Garden 35 minutes from base, and the spectacular (and famed) Castle Howard within 50 minutes. If history is preferred with an urban slant, head first to Thirsk (15 minutes) to explore the James Herriot museum, then travel on to Ripon’s cathedral and museums (10 minutes), Knaresborough’s castle and scenic viaduct (20 minutes), York’s minster, Jorvik Viking Centre and Shambles (40 minutes), and Durham’s castle, cathedral and museums (55 minutes). Open-air time is highly recommended nearby too. Explores around the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks are, of course, a must, but not at the expense of visiting the Howardian Hills (25 minutes), the balancing Brimham Rocks (30 minutes), or the stunning gardens at Studley Royal (20 minutes) and Harlow Carr (35 minutes). Adrenaline seekers, meanwhile, should make immediate tracks to Lightwater Valley, 20 minutes away, where in addition to pedaloes, toboggans and traditional fairground rides, Europe’s longest rollercoaster – the Ultimate – awaits. If that’s got juices pumping for more, it takes an hour to get to Flamingo Land to zip along rides in the theme park or meet animals at the zoo.
