  • Luxurious bespoke lodges at a small adults-only Co. Durham site
  • Kynren and The Bowes Museum both just over half an hour's drive
  • Stylish and cosy accommodation with private hot tub for each lodge
Looking for a little bit of luxury? Actually, you’ll get a fair whack of luxury when you stay in one of the lodges at Upper Weardale – the bespoke lodges at this adults-only site in Co. Durham have been designed to provide a truly top-quality experience for couples who’d like a cosy space in which to switch off and relax. Take a quick browse through the pictures of this small-scale glamping site and you may well feel like you’ve stumbled into the website for a boutique hotel, such is the gorgeous decor. Each cabin is cosy, comfortable and packed with colourful character – plus, of course, a whole lot of useful amenities. Think kingsize bed, spacious sofa, TV, heating and a fully equipped kitchen (with cooker, fridge, kettle, microwave and toaster), plus a stylish bathroom with toiletries, fluffy towels and cosy gowns. The real bonus of choosing a place like this over a boutique hotel is of course the connection to the outdoors. Here each lodge has its own private deck area so you can stroll out whenever you fancy it for a coffee in the fresh air… or maybe a glass of something while bubbling in your private hot tub? Either way, you’ll have stunning views over the surrounding scenery of the North Pennines National Landscape. Fancy seeing more of that scenery? This site is well placed for walks, bike rides and watersports, or heritage railway rides from Stanhope, five minutes’ drive away. The historic town also has pubs and cafés, and is a handy place to pick up supplies to take back to your cosy little cocoon.

Local attractions

No one will judge you if you decide to spend your whole break cosied up in your luxurious lodge – but with such lovely landscapes around it’s worth getting out a bit if you can. There are lots of walking and bike trails within a few miles of Upper Weardale, most of them within the boundaries of the North Pennines National Landscape. For a different outdoor activity, head to Weardale Adventures (10 minutes’ drive), where the options include watersports (canoeing, paddleboarding and open-water swimming among them), guided hill walks and adventurous activities like caving and gorge walking. Not up for that? The Weardale Railway Trust runs heritage services on selected days from Stanhope (five minutes) for a more leisurely way to take in the views. Dip into local history at The Bowes Museum, packed with decorative arts and fashion displays, or take a seat at Kynren for a spectacular open-air show telling the story of England with around a thousand performers, plus horses, music, fireworks and some fabulous effects. Both are a little over a half-hour drive away.
