  • Southwold, Oulton Broad watersports and Beccles all 15 minutes’ drive
  • Accessible facilities; Wrentham café, pub and shop five minutes’ drive
Seeking a peaceful Suffolk sojourn? At Henstead Fields Caravan and Campsite, you’re in the right spot for family fun (dogs included), local walks, scenic cycle rides or chilling on a North Sea beach – the closest is Kessingland, barely 10 minutes’ drive away, while the pretty seaside town of Southwold is 15 minutes by car. This family-run site is on the outskirts of Henstead village in North Suffolk; you can pitch up or park up on the camping field with plenty of space around you for privacy. Amenities include a disabled toilet and shower alongside separate male and female facilities, plus a washing-up area where pitch allocations are displayed. The field has more than enough green space for games with family and friends, but just keep an eye open for uneven ground while you’re running around. It’s also very rural, so you have the resident owls, muntjacs and pheasants for company – and on clear nights, the stars put on a spectacular display. As for catering, barbecues are allowed on site; there’s a convenience store and deli five minutes’ drive away in Wrentham if you need to buy in supplies. When you can’t face cooking, there’s also a café and pub in the village, and takeaways can be delivered to your pitch.

Peaceful, well-kept site, spacious level spots, modern facilities. Friendly owners. Dog-free zone, great local access. Peak times may mean limited restrooms; more hooks and better signs suggested.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The layout of the site was good with plenty of space and the site was not overcrowded. The toilet, shower and washing up facilities are good and kept immaculately clean. Pitches are level and of a good size. Location is ideal with only 15 minute drove to Southwold. The owners are friendly and helpful. Very peaceful.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The site is was great with good clean facilities and an attentive host.

Disliked Was hard to get a taxi that knew the site (go get back from Latitude)

From the manager: Hi Chris,
Thank you so much for taking the tie to write us a review. Taxi's around here are not great I'm afraid although we are on google maps now so hopefully the savvy driver will be able to look it up! for other guests pre booking taxi's is your best option if you require one. Their are numbers in on our information booklet or on request.
We're so pleased the facilities were up to scratch, Callum always gets a pat on the back when they're mentioned!! Have a lovely summer, Sarah and Callum.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Well maintained pitch; electricity and water on hardstanding; attractively enclosed by trees with screening from road; friendly greeting from site management; clean facilities.

Disliked Pitches arranged in an oval in a shape and size resembling a running track with not much to soften the frontal views of the toilets. Maybe a screen of planting? Awkward design of sanitary arrangement means first up gets one overlarge shower room; the remaining campers have a tiny shower to queue for. The disabled room is clearly preferable. Also, more mirrors in the ladies please.

From the manager: Dear Margaret,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're really pleased that you appreciated the well kept pitches and toilet facilities. Unfortunately, the lay out of the site will not be to everyone's liking but hopefully the photographs when booking should help people visualize the site. We have 4 showers, 2 of which are on the larger side not just the one. Sadly, we cannot, at this time, invest in large individual showers for each pitch to avoid some queuing. We will definitely look into putting more mirrors into the shower block along with more hooks. Thanks again, have a lovely summer Sarah and Callum.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked The pitches were a good size. There was plenty of room to fit our set up and the car. Hook up was close and we both thought it was really good to have a tap for your water incorporated in the same post.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Loved everything about this place. Cannot thank Sarah and Callum baugh for all their help and warm welcome. It was the Latitude Festival weekend, one of our group is an electric wheelchair user and it was a last minute booking. It was so quiet, spotless toilet and shower facilities. We'll definitely be coming back!

Local attractions

There’s bags going on for the whole family in lively Southwold (15 minutes’ drive); you can take high-speed boat rides around the North Sea coastline, discover the amusements along the famed pier, or have a potter around the old harbour. Adnams Brewery is open for guided tours and tastings of its wares, and also offers the chance to explore the landmark lighthouse that dominates the town. If you’re into high-octane action, try skydiving at Ellough (10 minutes) but if that sounds a bit scary, book hacks at the local riding school (five minutes) or make for Oulton Broad (15 minutes) for kayaking and sailing. You can also go paddleboarding along the River Waveney from Beccles (15 minutes). Get (quite) up close and personal with Big Five animals like lions and rhinos at Africa Alive (10 minutes), or sneak a bit of history into your kids with visits to Framlingham Castle (40 minutes) and the eccentric Tudor-era Orford Tower (45 minutes). If your offspring are still game on for more culture, Somerleyton Hall (half an hour) has colourful landscaped gardens and impressive Victorian architecture.
