  • No-frills adults-only retreat a 10-minute drive from Wroxham
  • Norwich 25 minutes’ drive; Great Yarmouth half an hour
  • Free-range eggs and seasonal apples and pears available on site
Henri’s Paddock is a small-scale site set on the gently sloping side of a family orchard. This secluded retreat is peaceful for a variety of reasons: not only is it set deep into the Norfolk countryside, there are also no noisy kids to disturb your stay. Well-behaved dogs, however, are more than welcome, and free to snuffle around on leads. The site is west-facing (so especially well placed for sunsets), with additional views over the south. It’s almost bang in the middle of the northern Norfolk Broads as well – Wroxham is a 10-minute drive to the north, while equally scenic Brundall is about the same distance in the opposite direction. There’s a wild feel to this place, so that means getting by without on-site toilet facilities during your stay here. However, there’s plenty to compensate for the spartan vibe. Apples and pears grow on these trees in the summer months, and in spring there are delicate-looking pale blossoms to admire. Henri’s Paddock’s industrious owners also do a nice little sideline in free-range eggs and fresh honey, both of which can be picked up on site. Blofield Heath, a quiet village with a restaurant, café, bus stop and garden centre, is 15 minutes away on foot.

Liked: Henri's Paddock was really great, peaceful with beautiful scenery to enjoy. James was very welcoming and helpful and told us the directions for ship, Indian and pub. The Paddock was very peaceful, lots of birds about, owls, bats and trees. The chickens came over to great us in the corner of their large run, there is also a pond. Highly recommend.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Loved everything about this place. James is a great host. The site is his garden, it’s very large and peaceful. It was a delight to see the chickens and there’s great views across the countryside. As I was leaving a robin came down onto the gate and James handed me a tub of mealworms, the robin came and landed in the tub for his treats. Lovely experience. I would definitely stay here again.

Local attractions

The wetlands, peat bogs and reed beds of Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve and Strumpshaw Fen (15 minutes’ drive) provide a home to assorted wildlife – from colourful kingfishers and marsh harriers, to lizards and rare butterflies. In Norwich (25 minutes), take a stroll along pretty Elm Hill, a cobbled street lined with half-timbered buildings, before heading to explore the medieval cathedral, with its distinctive soaring spire. Afterwards, pick up some provisions from Norwich Market and have a picnic on a bench at the elegant Plantation Garden. Stretching between the River Yare and the North Sea, Great Yarmouth (half an hour) has a large sandy beach that’s just the spot to devour some fish and chips. The Venetian Waterways spread across seven acres and include a series of winding canals crossed by bridges and inhabited by swans and herons.
