  • Small, quiet and comfortable Norfolk woodland site
  • Luxury accommodation with soft mattresses, fruit bowls and firepits
  • Shop selling local honey, fresh eggs and barista coffees
Forests, fens, catfish and… sitcom history? See the lot from this fab Norfolk spot. The team at Oak Lodge Glamping is big on the little details and that’s one of the reasons why this peaceful site just outside the village of Northwold gets many a thumbs-up from its visitors. This is back-to-nature stuff indeed… how could it be otherwise when you’re staying in a lush meadow surrounded by oak and beech trees? But it’s back-to-nature without the bad backs: luxury accommodation has soft mattresses, fairy lights and fruit bowls inside, and firepits and barbecues for your own use outside. The shop provides basic supplies, local honey and fresh eggs, tea and barista coffees and cold drinks; you can buy kindling and firewood for your outdoor feasts as well. And as for the amenities? The washrooms get warm reviews as well, for their spacious tiled showers inside a log cabin among the trees. Keen to get properly hands-on with the rural experience? Make sure you're around for Animal Hour, at 10am each morning – this is the time for kids of all ages to help hose down the pigs, feed the goats and say hello to the resident snake… Livery experiences are also available if you want to explore the countryside on horseback. A walk of 20 minutes across the fields (or a five-minute drive) fetches you up in Northwold, a little village with a lot to do. Elsewhere around, anglers can head to Fendick Fisheries where the lakes are stuffed with carp and catfish; browsers can fill their boots at the Bulldog Barns, where 30-plus dealers offer everything retro, vintage, recycled and shabby chic, while those less concerned about interiors can get their warpaint on at Combat Paintball. And that sitcom theme? Fans of vintage British comedy can drop into the Dad's Army Museum at Thetford, half an hour's drive away.

Bell tent

Liked: - Very spacious and open with plenty of space between tents which was very welcomed given that some campsites you're pitched very close to others.
- Plenty of space for our dog to roam and enjoy the outdoors.
- Super spacious bathrooms with endless hot water.
- Nice touch to have water, wine & marshmallows on arrival.
- Wood and kindling available for fire pit was also a nice touch.
- Fresh, clean bedding.

Disliked: - No signage on the road so difficult to find as Sat Nav not 100% accurate
- Entrance to site down a gravel road with MASSIVE potholes, which then leads to a very unsightly maintenance yard. Very surprising and unexpected. Makes you wonder if you've come to the wrong place, or indeed if you've been duped in to making a dodgy booking! But once through the yard and to the tents it's fine and perfectly acceptable, just not the nicest of entrances. Could be a bit more presentable and welcoming area for guests.

Local attractions

Family-friendly pubs with food are close to hand, a popular choice being the Crown Hotel in Mundford 10 minutes’ drive away. There’s an added bonus at the Bridge House Hotel in Brandon (15 minutes); hire rowing boats there to venture down the Little Ouse past water birds and weeping willows. Thetford (half an hour) is the place for shops and supermarkets but it’s a town worth lingering in too. Visit the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life to see how the Tudors did things, get contemplative in the ruins of the medieval priory… then spend some time in the Dad’s Army Museum to see a towering collection of sitcom memorabilia. Next door, Thetford Forest Park is brimming with walking trails and cycle paths; you can hire bikes here, or if you’re less energetically inclined, see the forest on a Segway. For an aerial view of this ancient bit of woodland, hit the treetop rope trails at Go Ape Thetford. It’s a 50-minute drive to the coast and The Wash National Nature Reserve, a marshland wilderness where footpaths go past flocks of wading birds under massive skies; head to Hunstanton for the beach and boats out to the seal colonies.
