  • Friendly, well-maintained site just outside Mundesley, north Norfolk
  • Cromer 20 minutes’ drive; Norwich 40 minutes
  • Pub, supermarket and other amenities within a mile
Pick a pitch at Hayfield Hideaways if you want to be close to some of the most splendid parts of Norfolk’s north coast. Surrounded by natural scenes and within easy walking distance (15 minutes, via a footpath) of the traditional village of Mundesley (and its beach), this site is also a five-minute walk from a bus stop where you can catch the Norfolk Coasthopper. It really couldn’t be easier to leave the car behind. Hayfield Hideaways is a family-run business that welcomes well-behaved kids and waggy-tailed friends. This is the sort of place to head to if you’re after a simple rural escape surrounded by lots of open space. In addition to a level grass field, the well-maintained site has a good range of basic services, with two toilets and two showers, plus other handy facilities like waste disposal points. After a long day exploring what’s on offer in the surrounding area – from North Sea beaches to the Norfolk Broads (half an hour’s drive) – you can relax at your pitch over a barbecue or head towards Mundesley, where there’s a variety of spots to eat including pubs, restaurants and fish and chip shops. Other amenities – a supermarket, butcher’s shop, ice-cream parlour and fruit and veg shop – are within a mile of the site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Hayfield Hideaways is an excellent campsite, small, but you felt there was distance between each pitch due to the wild flowers and long grasses between each pitch. The pitch was beautifully mown, flat and a good size for a large tent and vehicle. The toilets, showers and dish washing facilities were excellent; clean, well provided for and with hot water. We were lucky the camp fire ban had been lifted by the Council (it was imposed due to safety reasons after the exceptionally dry weather which is understandable). The welcome from the owners was lovely.

Disliked There is one thing I'd like to be tweaked, the ability to bring our Staffordshire Bull Terrier. We have two dogs, a Jackapoo and a Staffie, but Staffie's are not allowed on site, and it would be lovely if they were.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The site is small, really well kept with very clean facilities. It was pretty much full when we stayed but the pitches are well spaced out. The dog track is an excellent edition for dogs and there is a good footpath to walk into the village. We loved the trees and wild grass on the site. There is a charging point and you can have your ice packs re-frozen over night, which we didn’t use but is a great device to offer. It’s in a good location for exploring the local area.

Disliked Read the stop sign properly when you arrive. We didn’t and set-up on the wrong pitch number which meant we had to move. The site is close to the road, so although not too noisy over night you can hear the traffic, especially if you are on a pitch closer to the road. As it was pretty full we timed our morning bathroom visits early to avoid a queue.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Hey field hideaway is a quite little campsite which made me feel safe knowing there was only one way in and out as a first time solo camper. the site has working, clean toilets and showers that you can use to shower off the sand from your beach trips, and a simple but roomy washing up facility. Friday nights they have a local farm that cooks up a slight bbq which is definitely worth trying their burgers were delicious. Short drive to Horsey Gap Beach where you get the opportunity to see seals in their natural environment, Cromer is a short drive away too where you can go and watch shows on the pier or grab an ice cream.

Disliked Wi-Fi was spotty (but is notified in pitchup.com)

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We loved the circular plots with long meadow grass all around. It was beautiful and gave each plot a good amount of space. It’s a good location not too far from the beach too.

Disliked It would have been nice if there were a couple more toilets and showers to avoid waiting.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Plenty of space on the designated pitches. Facilities are basic but perfectly acceptable, always clean and no issue with hot water. It's only a few minutes drive outside Mundesley, although we didn't feel we could walk it with young kids as it's down the road.

Disliked Minor gripe, but our pitch (18) was fairly close to the road. Although its a country lane it was surprisingly busy and noisy. Pitches at the other end of the site would probably be better.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review. We’re pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. It’s great to hear you found the facilities clean and reliable, and appreciated the spacious pitches.

We completely understand your point about the walk into Mundesley with younger children. While it’s just a few minutes by car, we do actually have a clearly signposted off-road footpath that avoids the road entirely. It’s shown on the maps in the notice board by the washing-up shack, but if you return, we’d be more than happy to point it out in person.

Thank you also for your comments on Pitch 18. While it is one of the closer pitches to the lane, we’ve planted hundreds of native trees around the site to help screen this area. Now in our fifth year, they’re really starting to mature and will continue to improve the sense of peace and seclusion.

Thanks again for staying with us – we’d love to welcome you back again soon.

Best regards,

It’s lovely to know you appreciated the peaceful setting, the space between pitches, and the beautiful views. We’re especially pleased you made the most of the off-road walk to the beach, it’s one of our favourite features too.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful site- very well looked after. The toilets and showers and washing up area were kept spotless. Loved being able to walk to the beach (15-20 mins) and off road which is great for the kids.
Very chilled out and quiet site.

Disliked Next to a sewage works, it did smell on and off when they were emptying it I guess or the rain?! Bacton power station lights were bright- but could still see the stars just not as amazing as some places in Norfolk.
There wouldn't be much space for the kids to just play games on the grass if all pitches were full. Felt more suited to adults.
It was sooooo quiet, we felt bad talking outside after 9pm- so it just depends on what you like.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, spotless facilities, and the off-road walk to the beach – it’s something many of our guests, especially families, really value.

We appreciate your comments about the nearby water treatment plant. While it’s beyond our control, we’re always working to enhance the natural feel of the site – including planting hundreds of native trees to help screen and soften the surroundings.

While we do pride ourselves on being a quieter, more relaxed site, we warmly welcome families. We’ve created winding paths through the long grass to encourage children to explore and connect with nature, something that’s become a real highlight for many of our younger guests.

Thanks again for your feedback, we hope to welcome you and your family back again soon.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Quiet setting, plenty of space per pitch, friendly and helpful owner. Good use or solar energy for lighting. Showers good. Clean site. Helpful map of local area on display, all signage clear.

Disliked Would have liked mirrors in toilets and washing up area, as well as hooks on inside of toilets.

We really appreciate your feedback regarding mirrors and hooks in the toilets and washing-up area. It’s a great suggestion and something we’ll take back to the team to look at adding.

Thanks again for staying with us, and we hope to welcome you back soon.

The theatre occupies the tip of the town’s Victorian pier, where there are also a handful of dining options. Take a leisurely walk along the beach before climbing the Doctor’s Steps up to North Lodge Park. Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate (20 minutes) is a National Trust country house with elegant interiors decorated with delicate wallpaper (including hand-printed examples), paintings and handmade furniture. Aromatic herbs grow in the pretty walled garden, while the grounds include a vast area of woodland. In Norwich (40 minutes), take a trip back to the Middle Ages as you stroll along Elm Hill, a cobbled street lined with half-timbered buildings. Or visit Norwich Cathedral, with its splendid vaulted cloister, where you can meditate as you walk along the central grass labyrinth. There are views of the River Wensum’s leafy banks from St George’s St Bridge.
