Staffordshire scenery calling your name? A very good response is to book a pitch at Richmore Hall Campsite – as the name suggests, this friendly family-run site is set within the attractive grounds of the Richmore Hall estate, about 15 minutes’ drive east of Stoke-on-Trent. The views here are particularly lovely, looking out over the Staffordshire Moorlands, but what really makes this place stand out is the sense of space. Pitches here are generously sized, giving you plenty of scope to set your kit up how you like (within reason) and not be crammed in with your fellow guests. Families, couples and solo guests are all equally welcome here, as are any accompanying dogs. Boosting the appeal of these pitches further is a good list of handy facilities, including a communal kitchenette area (with washing machine and dryer as well as a fridge and kettle), stylish modern hot showers with plenty of hot water and clean ladies’ and gents' toilets. You're welcome to bring a barbecue along, and should be able to pick up all the relevant supplies at supermarkets in Cheadle (10 minutes’ drive) or Leek (15 minutes). This is one of those handy locations that’s got a real rural vibe but also easy road access, as it’s just off the A52. That means days out should be nice and straightforward, whether you’d like something low-key like a stroll through Consall Nature Park or big-ticket attractions such as Alton Towers (both within 15 minutes' drive).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely owners on a well-maintained site. Our grass pitch was generously sized and we had a great stay in our Tentbox. The owners went above and beyond, making sure that the stay was comfortable. A kettle, tea, coffee, sugar, a fridge and milk were provided in the kitchen area, along with mugs, cutlery, dish sponges, washing up liquid and towels. The toilets were kept immaculately clean and the showers were great and really modern (again, soap was provided in case you forgot your own). This site is only local to us so we will definitely return here and recommend it to friends. The site is only small, which is perfect for us as we prefer quiet sites. I think we have definitely found a gem - we cannot wait to return!

Disliked There was no hot water to wash our dishes with but we did boil the kettle so it's not a big deal!

We weren't too sure where to 'check in' when we arrived so parked up and had a little wonder around but the owners very promptly walked over to us to give us the information, as they did see us arrive.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A brilliant, peaceful campsite. We found the toilets, shower and kitchen clean, stylish and homely. Lots of home comforts, for example fridge, kettle, washing machine and hair dryer all make a really big difference. Extras like tea bags, milk, dish soap, hand soap, hand towels were all really appreciated. The site owners were welcoming, friendly, generous and had advice on the local area for us. The pitches are spacious, the grounds well kept and we found it easy to pitch our tent. Overall we would really recommend this campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Our camping trip was a wonderfully relaxing escape for our little family of two adults and our curious four-year-old. The campsite was cozy and well-kept, with clean showers. The owners were warm and welcoming, making us feel at home from the start. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, with shops just a ten minute drive away for any essentials. It was the perfect mix of comfort, convenience and nature.

Local attractions

Need to stretch the legs with a good walk? Warm up with a wander along the woodland trails at Consall Nature Park (10 minutes' drive), then plan some longer routes in the nearby Peak District National Park. A few favourite Peak District spots that can be easily accessed from the site include The Roaches (25 minutes), Thor’s Cave (35 minutes) and the Dovedale stepping stones (35 minutes). You may well spot some wildlife as you roam, but if you’ve got kids who’d like to see more exotic beasts you might like to take them to Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) or Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes). For a dip into the area’s history, take a ride on the steam trains run by Churnet Valley Railway (10 minutes), learn about the Middle Ages at Cheddleton Flint Mill (10 minutes) or get to know a famed artisan at World of Wedgewood (20 minutes). Alongside all this, it's quite possible that you'll want to factor in a trip to Alton Towers (20 minutes) – the theme park has heaps of attractions for all ages, including a waterpark and CBeebies-themed shows as well as the famed rollercoasters.
