  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

What customers say

Generous, well-maintained pitches with water & EHU, clean facilities & a welcoming pub with great food are highlights. Some pitches have a slope; WiFi can be patchy. Limited toilets/showers may be an issue when busy.

Liked Back again! Stayed a night on my own before family joined me but always feel safe. Kev, Mick and the staff make you feel so welcome. Amazing weather this weekend too.
Had a meal in the pub, reserved a table indoors and credit to the staff working in the heat cooking, thank you for a wonderful meal.
Honestly feels like home coming to this site.

1 bedroom on-site trailer

Liked Lovely sited tourer. Spacious and clean with plenty of space and outdoor seating. Sited close to the facilities on site. My in laws were total caravan novices but Kev and Mick looked after them.
They loved the pub, have a wonderful meal. Hard working staff given the heatwave.

Disliked Nothing to dislike as such but Where it was sited, it’s next to the large beer garden and given the heatwave, people were sat late in the night, a few had too many drinks and were shouting/swearing

Liked Lovely family campsite. Electric hook up and water on the pitch, lovely clean toilets and hot showers. Kitchen area to wash up and recycling bins all on site. Kev and the team were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Evening entertainment on friday night which was good as was the food. Outside beer garden and an outside kitchen for burgers and pizzas however undergoing a refurbishment atm. Definitely be back with the family.

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked The camp site was clean and well kept. We booked a grass pitch with electric hook up and there was water tap on pitch, which was a nice surprise, as then a full service pitch. Beautiful view from our pitch. Outside bar and food area very nice. It rained so we spent Friday evening in the site pub, great night and very welcoming local people.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
