  • CAMC members-only site a 20-minute drive from Wolverhampton
  • Bridgnorth 15 minutes’ drive; Iron Bridge and Dudley 25 minutes
  • Fishing pond; dogs welcome; in the grounds of an elegant mansion
You’re into ‘Bridgerton’; your partner is into fishing; the dogs will need their regular walks while on holiday; and it would be nice if the kids had plenty of room to run around (and tire themselves out) in. How do you make everybody happy? Simple: just book a place at Ludstone Caravan Park Certificated Location, a peaceful spot one mile north of the village of Claverly, on the outskirts of Wolverhampton (20 minutes’ drive). Here, members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club get to stay in the grounds of Ludstone Hall, a partially moated mansion dating back to the early 17th century. (If you’re curious about the history of the estate, join a guided tour of the museum, where you will also learn about the current owners and their business enterprises.) The location ought to please fans of period drama, but what about the anglers? Well, they can spend several happy hours sitting on the banks of the pond waiting for fish to bite (there’s a fee of £10 per rod per day). Note that the site runs a catch-and-release policy: you should use soft hooks so as not to harm the fish; in addition, please be aware of other wildlife in the lake. Spacious grass pitches come with expansive views of the countryside and the distant Shropshire Hills (40 minutes), as well as more mundane perks like water hook-up and drainage facilities. There are a couple of pubs serving food (on or off the B4176) within a half-hour walk, and more dining options in Claverley.

Local attractions

In the historic market town of Bridgnorth (15 minutes’ drive), the Cliff Railway is a vintage funicular travelling along a steep hill; there are splendid views of the town from the top station. Take a stroll among the colourful flower beds in Bridgnorth Town Park and check out the castle remains. Spanning the River Severn since 1779, the Iron Bridge (25 minutes) was the first ever bridge built in this material. Cross it to take in splendid views of the forested gorge that surrounds it. The bridge and other local structures, such as the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, form a UNESCO World Heritage site. Whether your kids are into animals or medieval castles, they ought to enjoy a visit to Dudley (25 minutes), where the zoo (which is home to red pandas, wallabies and meerkats among other beasties) occupies the grounds of a ruined fortress that was destroyed during the English Civil War.
