  • Small bell tent site in 29 acres of peaceful Shropshire countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from Alderford Lake and half an hour from Shrewsbury
  • Safe paddock for the dog in front of each bell tent
Thinking about all the hours you have ahead of yourself to unwind and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of the Shropshire countryside? Here's a place where you'll get to properly put your plans into motion: Papermill Park, a tiny bell tent site within 29 acres of spectacular countryside. With a safe paddock for the dog in front of each tent, there should be wagging tails from the pups and a big thumbs up from the humans. They're just a short walk away from the toilet and shower facilities, which are up a winding uphill track. Think of it as a warm-up for the rest of the day… When you're getting ready for the day, you might want to pull on a swimsuit underneath your garments and drive 15 minutes to Alderford Lake for activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding and open-water swimming. A trusty pair of trainers will do for Hawkstone Follies, 10 minutes’ drive away, where there are 100 acres of woods, cliffs, crags and caves. This spot's been toured by adventurous folks since the 19th century. For your snacks, meals and sweet treats, restaurants and grocery shops are within 10 minutes’ drive of Papermill Park; most are concentrated in Wem and Shawbury. There’s plenty of that in Shrewsbury too, which is just half an hour’s drive away. As the county town of Shropshire, it’s full of splendid sights, from the river Severn and a Tudor centre with half-timbered houses to the medieval castle and a couple of historic churches.

Local attractions

Do you have an appetite for some Shropshire history? Sat along the Shropshire Union Canal, Whitchurch (20 minutes’ drive) is full of it. After all, it's been around since the Roman times, gathering a collection of 200 listed buildings and hosting cheese fairs. Picnic by the bandstand in Jubilee Park or go for a trot on the Sandstone Trail, a path that follows along the rural canal towpaths past farms, cafés and pubs (how handy for a pitstop). Market Drayton (20 minutes) is another canalside town with half-timbered buildings. The Buttercross market is held every Wednesday should you fancy browsing the stalls. The town is also well known for its beer (there's a brewery in the town centre) and gingerbread (a 200-year-old town tradition). Join the Land’s End to John o’Groats cycle trail for a long-distance cycle from the town too. Grindley Brook Locks (20 minutes) also has some lovely walks and cycle routes. If you’re keen to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along your stroll, a good bet is Brown Moss (20 minutes) near Whitchurch, which has marshes, pools and woodlands along with a café.
