Misty morning mosco island, ellesmere lake

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools
Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Liked We had a choice of stands and could park the way we wanted. The stands are spacious and some are private. The facilities are very clean and were kept clean during our stay. We enjoyed being close to the mere and walked around it a couple of times. We also loved the walk to Ellesmere. There is a lot to explore in the are within a 30min drive.

Disliked Not to do with the site itself, but the access roads to the site are very narrow country lanes. Our caravan barely fitted down these tracks. Importantly, follow the instructions send by the owner. Our GPS took us in the other way and it was very challenging. We had to cross a bridge and the caravan fitted with a few centimetres to spare. Phone signal are very limited (not the sites fault). WiFi limited to around the lapa.

Enjoyed the experience.

Liked Setting, and pitch choice, we're great nicely spread out, great if you are a dog owner plenty of walking around the lake .

Disliked Nothing major, maybe the toilet block could be updated, however it was fine , the only other thing we didn't like much was the fact you had to walk / drive into town to find the nearest pub/ something to eat.which if you walk will take around 1hr and 25 mins.

From the manager: Hello Dalton ,

Thanks for your review , I would just point out two minor things , The walk to several pubs is two & a half miles 45 minutes one way ! We also have the communal area where you can take your own drinks , listen to music & have food delivered !

Many thanks

Dave Allen

Liked Such a lovely quiet but busy site.
All facilities were fabulous.
The communal kitchen area was just perfect! Cosy, seating area.
Set in a beautiful landscape. Lots of little ponds, trees and a very pretty mere to walk straight out of the site onto with a circular walk around it.

Disliked Not a lot!
A double edge sword - doesn’t take children which in many respects was lovely but I’d love to go back as a family.

A piece of paradise great site great location great hosts.

Liked As soon as we arrived we were greeted and showed around to pick our pitch. We were given a map of the local area and guidance how to get around which was super helpful as showed us how to get to Ellesmere by foot as we were kind of dreading walking the roads!

The facilities on the site were amazing, clean and tidy and the communal area was very cool although we didn’t spend much time there as we only stayed 2 nights but it’s definitely a place to go chill, cook or just hang out.

The hosts.. Ingrid and David are such lovely and welcoming people and they have made the site amazing.

The site.. It’s very natural so if that’s your thing, which is 100% ours, then this is the site for you. In the hedge by our pitch was a blackbirds nest and we were greeted by Berny (We named him) every morning and evening with his songs. Tons of rabbits about and the walks around the lakes are amazing. We spent so much time walking around we even managed to break our spaniel Stan.

We will 100% be going back for a longer stay.

Thanks Ingrid and David, we loved meeting you and our short stay. Looking forward to coming back soon.

Disliked There is limited phone signal here but they do have WiFi but it doesn’t cover the site. Maybe to add some WiFi extenders is the only thing I would say as an improvement although being disconnected is not a bad thing though!

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
