  • Off-grid site on a mushroom farm in rewilded Rutland countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Rutland Water and 20 minutes to Belvoir Castle
  • Wildlife watching on site; pub within a 30-minute walk of the site
Totally off-grid, The Mushroom Farm Campsite feels like a proper pioneering camp. Set on the edge of an 11-acre reserve (which you’re free to wander, by the way), it’s at the end of a little track from the farming village of Thistleton in rural Rutland. This site is spacious, with lots of space for you to lounge around or prepare a tasty barbecue without leaving your pitch. Guests are given a number code for the gate and an info pack to get you started on exploring the local area, where there is (very handily) a pub within half an hour's walk. The hosts are available by phone and are a 10-minute drive away if you have any problems. This is not a manicured site and you’ll be sharing it with wildlife – frequent visitors include songbirds, red kites, kestrels, owls, bats, lizards, frogs and toads, snakes, rabbits and hares, muntjac deer, mice, foxes, dragonflies, butterflies, moths and beetles… The camp is set on a mushroom farm with the young trees and large areas left to rewild. This means flowering thistles and uneven ground so it may not be suitable for babies, very young children or people with health conditions.

What customers say

Peaceful, "off-grid" site with spacious, private pitches. Praised for clean, well-designed facilities (solar showers, composting toilets). Honesty shop & friendly owners a hit. Minor points: wider paths, fire pit grills, inconsistent showers.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked It was a very lovely place to relax from our long journey from Stirling,

Easy access and a great choice of spaces,

My daughter and I loved it there, lovely little fire pit set up for us,

Even saw some little bats as the sun went down,

Gazed at the stars then went to bed, very quiet,

I would certainly come back.

Disliked Nothing, although it was tight getting into the site as the track has a cable sticking out and also the apple tree could be an issue for taller vehicles.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Everything.
I booked this site as a last minute get away with my daughters.
We wanted a no frills pitch where we could have a fire and enjoy being out in nature. That's exactly what we got.
The site was well maintained while still feeling "wild"; simple pitches cut in to long grass and trees. The pitches didn't overlook anyone else and our far end pitch had nobody walk or drive past and there were clean composting toilets spaced near all the pitches.
Communication from Abbie, the site owner, was good. A simple message with all the necessary information.

Disliked Building noise strted early at a nearby site (HS2?).
This is entirely beyond the owner's control so would never hold it against them and it didn't affect our sleep, but it's worth knowing if you have smaller children/light sleepers.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I loved everything about The Mushroom Farm Campsite. The site itself is simply beautiful, tranquil and spacious. There is a wide choice of secluded pitches and plenty of capacity in the more spacious grassy meadow at the far end of the site. We explored the mown but wild nature loop through the campsite and loved admiring the sunset and moon rise over the trees and fields.
The facilities were conveniently placed, well thought out and well kept with plenty of paper, and available hand wash stations with soap and water.
During our 3 night stay I enjoyed a Solar Shower in the afternoon and my partner and son enjoyed the stove heated Bucket Shower in the morning. I would have happily enjoyed them again if we'd stayed longer (or hadn't visited the local leisure centre for a swim!)
We felt very relaxed here with our kids (5 and 7) and they loved playing in the nearby den area and making new friends among the neighbours who invited us for marshmallow toasting around the fire.

Disliked The only minor downside is felt when you have to heat a kettle of water to wash up the dishes! Keep your phone charged up at every opportunity whilst you are out and about as there is no power.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Absolutely stunning campsite. Lovely solar showers, clean compost loos. Plenty of space between pitches. Super comms from the owner and checked all was ok whilst we were there. Can’t wait to come back here. Well stocked honesty tent. Great little communal area under cover.

Disliked Some fellow campers were driving very quick through site.

From the manager: Oh sorry about that, I ask people to drive slowly down the lane but assumed they'd drive slowly on the field because it's bumpy, I'll ask people to drive slowly on site too so hopefully won't be a problem next time. Thanks for the great review! Abbie :-)

Lovely little stay on our travels to The North 😊

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Cool campsite with a laid back vibe. The owners messages you all the details, it is mainly a self sufficient campsite.
The bucket shower was amazing, which you can heat up and the composting toilets work great. Lots of thought had being put into this campsite for what it is. Especially like the mini tap next to the compost toilet.

There is some picnic benches and a waterproof tarp you can sit inside when raining.

There is water provided in a tuck shop tent, as well as plenty of firewood, and other supplies. You can pay by bank transfer or cash.

The pitches are also split up across the site with your own mowed out piece of lawn with the field.

Nice area was visiting family near here so has being an idea place to stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The privacy, the feel of it. The lay out of the site seemed really spacious and peaceful. The mixture of patches of nature, some more established than others, and looked like a few potential ponds being established which would be cool. Can't wait to come again some time and see how it progresses. Especially as the trees grow and create some additional shelter from some of the wind, ha.
Reasonable spread of the facilities around the site, and perhaps best was the communication from Abbie. pre-arrival email and contact, on the day, a call, detailed and clear text.

Also really close to local amenities and places to visit.
