  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back to basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back to basics facilities, including portable toilets and cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely everything. Despite not having electric hook up we managed with gas, power banks and a solar panel. The panoramic view is stunning. Great walking. East takes you to a lovely bluebell wood and more beyond and west takes you into Wallingford and the Thames where there is beautiful walking alongside the river.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Large, flat field with very nice distant views. Not that many people when I went over Easter so plenty of space to have privacy. On arrival you text a number to check in then find your own spot. The phone number on some signs is wrong.
The location is excellent. It’s right on the ridgeway path. Also near to beautiful towns like Wallingford.

Disliked: No hot water so didn’t shower.
Also hard to wash pans in freezing cold water. But it was made clear in description that it’s a cold water site only.
Wouldn’t stay more than a night because of this.

Liked: Beautifully kept field with toilet and shower facilities.
Enhance your stay with a full fire kit so you can get the full camping experience.
Beautiful scenery although can be a bit windy, a wind break is useful if you have one.
Plain camping, no frills. If you want wifi and electric look elsewhere.

Primitive grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: - [ ] Really lovely location. Huge site and completely level with loads of room between pitches. Nice local walks along the Ridgeway path but it is single file pretty much entirely and at this point along its length, encased with woods so the views are limited. Loads of wildlife to see. Onsite the toilets were pretty grim - the flushing systems of the portaloos couldn’t cope with the volume of waste and most portaloos were swimming in sewage late Saturday evening. The handwashing pumps just didn’t work at all. There’s about 10 portaloos at one end of the field. Would be better if they were spread out - as it’s a 10 minute trek to them from the far end of the field. Plus please separate men’s from women’s? I hate sharing a toilet space where a man has had free rein to wave it all about!!! Only one water station and one washing up sink for the entire huge field. (Both of which were surrounded by ankle deep mud) It’s card only to buy firewood. There’s an app to take payment but then I received no code for the locked wood store. Fortunately a young couple told me the combination - which kind of defeats the purpose of a locked store - an honesty box would be just as secure?! It’s a lovely site but I’ve paid half the price for far better facilities.

Disliked: Grim portaloos which were a trek away and unsatisfactory arrangement for purchasing firewood

From the manager: We're so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay on site Fiona.

Frustratingly many of your concerns could have easily been resolved in a quick message or call to the campsite phone number. We didn't receive notification that your payment for firewood had been made nor does it seem that you followed up by message to ask for the code, frustrating as this would have been very quickly and easily resolved. We are always a simple phone call or a message away. It is frustrating that this could have been so quickly and easily resolved. Many customers love the simplicity and ease of our campfire collection system - from this year's reviews it is one of the most often mentioned positive, but just to note fire pits can also very easily be pre-ordered in advance when booking a pitch.

Similarly it seemed you missed the 4 different water points that are on site, we have 4 water taps on site as well as two washing up sinks.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
