Nice country walk followed by a glass of wine? Perhaps some other outdoor activity followed by a glass of wine? Or an outing to one of the Midlands’ top historic sights followed by a glass of wine? Yes, you guessed it – the drinks are rather fine at Wolds Wine Estate, in the Nottinghamshire countryside just outside the town of Keyworth. This is a young estate that doesn’t expect its first tipples to be ready until 2023 – but in the meantime they’ve got a good little stash of local wines to buy from their shop. Drop the staff a note in advance and they can even arrange to have your purchase waiting in your pod on arrival (in the fridge if appropriate). The deck outside your pod is the place to sip whatever drink you select (it doesn’t even have to be wine…). Each one has been set up to have fine views out over the vineyard, with seating and a barbecue/firepit to keep you comfy while you admire the scenery. There’s a farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away if you’d like to pick up some bits to cook on the grill. Other facilities in these luxury glamping pods include private bedrooms (with bed linen supplied), stylish bathrooms and well-equipped kitchens with fridge, toaster and kettle. All in all, they make a rather fine base for travellers seeking a relaxing rural retreat with a bit of activity thrown in.

Local attractions

Because you can’t spend all of your time drinking wine (maybe…), it’s handy to know that Wolds Wine Estate is well placed for family days out at Belvoir Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where you can explore the grounds and eat artisan ice cream in The Engine Yard. Other great ideas for keeping the kids happy include watching immersive films in the National Space Centre’s planetarium or meeting with medieval legends at The Robin Hood Experience (both 25 minutes). Keep up the activity levels with fishing and clay shooting adventures at Lakeside Sporting Ltd (10 minutes), or whizz around the inflatable, floating obstacle course at Holme Pierrepont Country Park, National Water Sports Centre (15 minutes), while there are merry-go-rounds and boat rides at Twinlakes Park (25 minutes). For more sedate pursuits, wander the forested avenues from Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre (45 minutes) or pick seasonal bouquets at Wysall Flower Farm (10 minutes). There are deer herds to spot at Wollaton Hall, Gardens and Deer Park (20 minutes), while the petting zoo at White Post Farm (35 minutes) offers encounters with cows, meerkats and reptiles.
