  • Luxury glamping site on an alpaca farm by the Midshires Way
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham; 45 minutes from Rutland Water
  • Adults-only site a mile from East Leake; pub 15 minutes' walk away
As the name suggests, Midshires Way Campsite and Alpaca Farm is right off the popular Midshires Way footpath, a long-distance trail that runs all the way from the Chiltern Hills up to Stockport at its northern end. And this splendid south Nottinghamshire location also delivers on the animal inhabitants advertised – they've got alpacas here, and what a fantastically fluffy bunch they are. You won't find any kids cooing over them, though, as this is an adults-only setup that thrives on rural peace and quiet. Dogs, however, are permitted on site, and treated to their own exercise area where they can run about and make new friends. Facilities for the humans include smart heated toilet and shower facilities, plus a laundry area. Of an evening, the barbecue area is the place to be in the evening for sipping drinks at sunset or cooking dinner over coals. If you’d rather someone else did the cooking or provided the pints, there are plenty of places to pick up meals and drinks in East Leake, a village less than a mile away from the farm. When not out roaming, guests might like to play golf, ride the local steam train, go fishing, try their luck at the races or get behind the wheel of a supercar – all opportunities that can be reached within a half-hour drive. There are plenty of footpaths and bridleways around too for walkers who don't fancy the long-distance effort.

I would definitely recommend staying here!
The lodges were fully equipped with everything you need. It was lovely waking up to see the horses and alpacas.

Disliked: There was quite a few cobwebs in the lodge (to be expected when In a lodge in a field)

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Nice clean site with ten spacious pitches. Lovely surroundings with good dog walking and exercise areas on site and the Horses and Alpacas are great addition. East Leake is a nice large village with four pubs and plenty of eating options and only a 30 minute walk from the site either via a bridle way or a quiet road. Will definitely be back !

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Peaceful, Views, space, shower block. Right under flight path to airport, so lots of plane spotting.

Good central area with good roads. Short drive to local village with most things you would require

I blow hot and cold as to whether I would recommend this site or, indeed, if I would choose to return. As I write, the answer is yes, particularly if I was on a hard standing. However, the review questions, belo insist I say yes or no, so the answer must be no to recommending it. A pity, because many would enjoy it.

Disliked: Right under flight path to airport could be troublesome to some.

Entry to site is very confusing; 2 entrances are close together; take the wrong one and you’ll get a lot of reversing a caravan practice. A passing cyclist helped me reverse out, telling me quite a few people find it confusing. Spoke to owner about it; not interested.

Grass pitch not level.

Quite strict rules using words like forbidden, etc. I would like to say he was friendly as I am sure he was trying to be.

If you take a grass pitch, be prepared to be asked to park your car a short walk away on hard standing.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Nice countryside, pitch a good size with EHU and water.
Dog walk area available.
Showers and toilet spotless.

Disliked: Welcome very unfriendly, we travel a lot to campsites and this is one of the worst welcomes we have received. List of “ Don’ts”
One of the owners passed by shortly after arriving and questioned if we’d checked in at reception which we had and who said we go on that pitch! Felt like we were doing something wrong. No hello or welcome!

We had chosen the site as it was near to our relatives, who came by to pick up us up for the afternoon/evening. The owners promptly turned up when they arrived and told them they had to leave immediately, no visitors allowed. As stated in the website apparently. On checking it wasn’t clear on the booking page and website states that it is great site for visiting family in the area. Can’t park on site and can’t visit at all!

We asked if they could stay 20/30 mins as we were still pitching they wanted to help before we went off the site together and were clearly told no!
No flexibility or understanding of individual situation.
We were told the site was full and it was a strict policy but everyone was out so not sure what the harm was. They could see we were pitching up, all had tent pegs and sorting out the awning.
On day of leaving was questioned by the cleaner as to if I was having a shower, as she had just cleaned them! ( 8.40am) made to feel I shouldn’t be having one.

This could have been a very different experience if the owners were more customer focused, friendly and caring. That is what makes people return.

Lighting and signage to the toilets poor, and shale difficult to walk on.
On a flight path too so very noisy. Bins and waste a long way from the pitch.

Could have forgiven all of that if the owners behaved differently and returned when visiting family but definitely won’t be returning!

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Arrived after informing the owner we would be late and we were given pitch 2. No problems pitching up in the dark and had a restful first night. We were on the go early next morning and left the pitch with no problems. Loved the clean shower/toilet rooms. We were only needing the site as a stop over so it served us well both nights.

Disliked: Only downside to this site is the direct flyover for the airport which can’t be helped obviously. I had great fun with the flight radar app identifying the planes and where they had come from but our nervous dog wasn’t so keen.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The facilities are absolutely fabulous! So clean and warm with lots of hot water.
The hardstanding pitches are very level side to side which meant we only had to level the van front to back.

Disliked: The chemical toilet disposal is a bit far, but it also means its not by your pitch.

Local attractions

Close to base, you can ride the steam-powered Great Central Railway (15 minutes' drive); amble towards East Leake and watch the trains puffing through if you only fancy a glimpse. Other local activities of note include spots such as Rushcliffe Golf Course (five minutes), Lakeside Sporting fishing lakes (15 minutes) and Prestwold (10 minutes), where you can get behind the wheel of a turbo-charged car. Visit more motorsport spots, starting with nearby Donington Park Circuit (20 minutes), or try some old-school four-legged racing at Nottingham's racecourse instead. When the heat of the action's worn off, consider taking a trip to the John Taylor & Co bell foundry, the biggest such site in the world. If campanology doesn't quite chime in with your idea of a dream break, perhaps you'll be taken by alternative heritage sites like Calke Abbey (half an hour) or Belvoir Castle (40 minutes), where the architecture and formal gardens are as good as certain to pass muster with history buffs. Rutland Water (45 minutes) is another promising destination if you're minded to get up to walks, bike rides, birdspotting or watersports in a thoroughly natural setting.
