Grass camping ground
Campsite view

  • Wild camping on the banks of the River Nene near Fotheringhay Castle
  • A 10-minute drive to historic Oundle; 25 minutes to Burghley House
  • Back-to-basics grass pitches five minutes’ walk from a traditional pub
What a spot for a wild-camping break. A vast, grass field on the side of the River Nene, with the ruins of Fotheringhay Castle as your backdrop. Whatever the pitches at Castle Farm Site may lack in facilities, they certainly make up for it in the peace and calm of their surroundings. Please note that this site does not have electricity, so you’ll need to bring torches for moving around at night – and if you really can’t bear to be out of touch with the world, chargers for your devices – from home. So what does the site offer? Simple portable toilets, riverside pitches and rural seclusion. Stroll along the river to the historic village of Fotheringhay (five minutes’ walk) for a couple of pints in the local, and there are plenty of traditional and welcoming pubs in less than 20 minutes’ drive. In other practical considerations, you can replenish essentials for the barbecue (again, bring kit from home) from the convenience store in Warmington (five minutes’ drive) or do a serious stock up in Peterborough (20 minutes) supermarkets.

Liked The basics. Atmosphere. The couple running the site are lovely. The village is a nice place to walk around. Plenty of space to pitch up. Camp fires allowed which is great.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely back to basics site- portaloos always clean and fresh.
Great to have somewhere for the children to play. The river is a great resource too - lots of swimmers, paddleboarders and kayaks

Disliked The dog poo bin was very smelly in the heat - and as it was situated next to the portaloos it made things very unplesant.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked 360 degree views - anywhere on site you pitch up has a far-reaching countryside view

Riverside access
Wide open fields
Nooks and crannies at different height levels for you to find a perfect pitch
Local historic attractions adjacent
Village with pub diner adjacent
Plenty of local walks and watersports
Warden on site
Raised fire pits permitted
Water and portaloos (very clean)
Friendly staff

We have stayed here in our old classic campervan with our children a few times and it’s easy access.
Yesterday I stayed on my own with a tent, managed to have the whole top end of the field to myself which was lovely.

The site is good for children too plenty of space to run around and small wooded paths to explore. As long as vigilance is taken by the river. There is water safety equipment installed.

Disliked Nothing. I prefer basic campsites and I hope this one never changes from that!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a wonderful stay at Castle Farm. We live quite close by but decided to take our 3 year old son on his first camping trip here. It was peaceful, picturesque, and the river frontage was stunning.

A special mention to Kaz and Mark for being wonderful hosts and for making our sons first experience so amazing. They couldn’t have been more helpful especially when our son lost a special dinosaur friend 😱 the effort they went to really touched us and created memories we’ll never forget! Thank you!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The open ‘pitch-less’ campsite style. Amenities were described as minimal and basic yet were clean, well stocked and apt (portable toilets). Kaz was extremely helpful and accommodating as a host and provided us with a camping chair and an axe to use free of charge. The location was stunning and it made for the perfect countryside escape.

Local attractions

If you fancy having an easy day and staying close to the campsite, have a poke around the ruined castle in Fotheringhay (five minutes’ walk). It has played an important part in history, being the birthplace of King Richard III in 1452, and where Mary, Queen of Scots, was put on trial and executed in 1587. It’s worth having a look in the church too, where there are royal monuments and tombs near the altar. Slightly further afield, the mellow-stone market town of Oundle (10 minutes’ drive) is packed with Georgian architecture and indie shops. You can take guided tours of sumptuous apartments in the vast mansion of Burghley House (25 minutes), walk in the gardens, pick up souvenirs at summer food markets and watch concerts throughout the year. Holidaying with kids who need to run off some energy? Spoil them with a session in the play barn at Sacrewell Heritage Farm and Country Centre, or let them cuddle rabbits and guinea pigs at the animal village. Head for Barnwell Country Park (both 10 minutes) so younger kids can have a safe play on the wooden climbing equipment.
