  • Pop-up campsite in a farm orchard near Spilsby in Lincolnshire
  • A 20-minute drive to Skegness beach and the Lincolnshire Wolds
  • Off-grid, pick-your-own pitches; five minutes’ drive to shops and pubs
No need to reserve a specific pitch at Grange Farm Orchard; just book your stay and turn up at this working farm near Spilsby, Lincolnshire to choose your own camping area within the sheltered orchard. With a limited number of tent pitches, nobody should ever feel crowded, and in fact the only noise you may hear is from the cows lowing in neighbouring fields (the site is set on a third-generation cattle and arable farm). Based in the sleepy rural village of Halton Holegate, just 15 minutes' drive from the sandy easy coast, the site is a peaceful spot for families (and any well-behaved dogs) to sit back and catch up with their busy lives. Nevertheless, it’s not far from life’s necessities, including a raft of pubs and takeaways in Spilsby (five minutes’ drive), and supermarkets for stocking up on grocery essentials. There's also a great butcher's in Ashby by Partney (also five minutes) for barbecue essentials. Keen to get the walking boots on? The Lincolnshire Wolds (20 minutes) await with all their hiking trails. And if you’d rather spend your days at the seaside, coastal resorts including Skegness are about the same distance away. Please note, as this is wild camping with a very laid-back vibe, there is no electricity on the pitches. Bring torches for late-night manoeuvres around the site. However, a compost toilet and running water are both available.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This place was gorgous, set in a small orchard away from the rest of the world on a lovely cattle farm. Lovely owners, lovely small campsite that doesn't get overfilled so there was plenty of space. The owner Jeff even came round and we had a lovely conversation with him, I could have listened to him talk all evening! Great location as well, near the wolds and beaches of Lincolnshire.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

Any animal-mad kids with you? They might well appreciate a trip to Northcote Heavy Horse Centre (five minutes’ drive) to pet ponies, learn to groom Shire horses and watch raptor displays. At ARK Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (15 minutes), you can be zookeepers for the day, looking after rare rescued big cats, meet the meerkats and let toddlers loose at the soft-play centre. Rather be splashing around on the beach? Head straight for Skegness (20 minutes), where there’s plenty for families to do as the sandy expanse is backed by fun fairs, go-karting and a ten-pin bowling alley. For a more sedate seaside visit, the grassland and dunes at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (35 minutes) are a haven for wading birds – and you might be lucky enough to see grey seals basking too. If you fancy some gentle retail therapy, Louth (half an hour) is a pretty Georgian-era town – incidentally with the tallest church spire in the country, where weekly markets are stacked with Lincolnshire cheeses and plum loaves, and loads of shops sell quality local foodie produce. It’s also the spot for browsing antique stores to pick up fine porcelain, vintage clothing and military memorabilia.
