  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail
What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham, is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too… Folks use The Beeches site in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site. The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too. Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – and the folk here recommend old Roman road Ermine Street as a top spot for walkies.

Liked: Well kept, very friendly guys who ran it. Clean toilets and hot showers. Great for families with younger children great play area for them to run about in.

Disliked: Nothing really, bit of noise from the road but it says this in the advert so no surprise.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: This was my first trip here with a triple purpose, to tow the caravan a significant distance for the first time, to visit friends in an area we used to live and to work.

On arrival, probably by coincidence Dawn, one of the site managers was at the gate to welcome me and let me through to my choice of grass pitches. Fortunately this was easy access so I didn't have to show off my meagre caravan reversing skills. Dawn then explained the facilities, I got set up then went off to get some shopping in a few miles away in Sleaford which has all the general facilites and shopping you might expect from a relatively small town.

Having only recently opened for the season there were still a couple of outstanding jobs to do, as explained by Dawn's partner, Lee (hope I've remembered your name correctly). Throughout my stay Dawn and Lee were always helpfull with local info or just for a bit of a chat.

The Beeches is ideally placed to access the Viking Way, a long distance path, which I sampled on a couple of evenings. Also I'd brought my bike along so managed to take in some of the lanes and hills in the general area between Sleaford, Grantham and Newark.

There's also the Aviation Heritage Centre, just a couple of miles away at the opposite end of RAF Cranwell AIrfield, not visited this time but on my list for the next visit.

Not a dislike but be aware that the A17 is close by and if you're a light sleeper, the random clumps of traffic in the early hours may need masking by the use of ear plugs and/or leaving music playing low thorugh the night, my solution.

Already booked my next stay.

Liked: Warm friendly welcome. Facilities clean and functional. Had the place to ourselves!

Disliked: Unfortunately we had not realised just how close the site is to the main road. It was noisy to sleep esp as we were in pop-top so essentially under canvas.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Stayed here with my wife and her sister, nice little site, a bit awkward to find, as you turn from the A17 on to the B6043 it's the first right (apx 70 mts) from A17, turn right again and the entrance is just past the last house on the left. The site is nicely laid out with what appeared to be several long term/season pitch caravans that I assume get mainly weekend use.

As we stayed mid week there were no families but the general layout looks very family orientated (adventure playground a dozen or so different size bikes for maybe 3 to 14 yrs old ), the facilities were clean with plenty of hot water, but a little basic, and the location is good for visiting surrounding towns/villages etc.

Although you can here the traffic on the A17 the night time level drops considerably and didn't cause anyone a problem sleeping etc., The people who were on site were all friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Could do with a mirror at the wash basins for having a shave.

From the manager: Roger, thank you for taking the time to post a review. We have been refurbishing the mirrors so they will be going back up very soon and are on our list of jobs to do.
We are definitely tucked away and we have upgraded signage to assist campers to find us and we have more signs to go up soon.
Yes we do have seasonal campers who spend weekends and holidays with us but we do welcome touring caravans too. We are predominantly a family orientated site but yes we like to be ‘rustic’ in our description of the site. We are always helpful when we can be, as this is our primary objective amongst many others. We hope to welcome you back to The Beeches in the near future.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great site, big pitch, good clean toilets and showers, washing up area, lovely park for the kids, locked in so feel secure, lovely wardens who put on bouncy castles for the kids and free hot dogs and burgers, had an absolutely fantastic weekend and will be making this our go to site for camping

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Stacey, thank you for taking the time to post a review.
We do pride ourselves on being a welcoming campsite and hearing children play safely outdoors is something we welcome and encourage. However, on the weekend you visited we had the site Fun Day which your children and I’m sure you enjoyed and is organised annually.
We would love to have you return to us again and thanks again for taking the time to post this.

Unfortunately would not go back… everything needs a good clean.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Park was good for the kids

Disliked: Unfortunately the site was poorly sign posted took ages too find. Upon arrival was very underwhelmed, the site looks like it needs a good clean lots of abandoned looking caravans that were filthy. shower block very basic, issues with toilets flushing when we was there and No mirror in bathroom. The road noise….HORRENDOUS , we was right next to it and first night never slept, quick visit to boots for earplugs otherwise we would have come home, our pitch was very uneven with big holes in it. Cafe never opened once whilst we was there in fact that looked abandoned too. left a day early and unfortunately would not be back.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Lisa, thank you for your review, and sorry to hear that you would not visit again.
I spoke to you the day you left and apart from the lack of a mirror in the shower blocks and road noise, you didn’t mention anything else. You were offered an alternative pitch further away from the road, which you declined. One of your children was ill, you told me, hence you leaving a day early. I also explained that we had mirrors to go back into the shower block and why they had been temporarily removed, due to repainting the inside.
The cafe that is also in the hamlet of Byards Leap, has absolutely nothing to do with the campsite and are unable to comment on why it was closed.
The ‘abandoned caravans’ you spoke of are owned and used by seasonal campers and we have asked that they be cleaned.
We are classed as a basic/budget site on PitchUp, and our prices reflect that.
With regards to the road noise which, we can do nothing about, we feel that it is our campers responsibility to look on the map to see where we are located. Had you done that you would have seen that our site runs parallel to the A17!

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Very friendly welcome, nice man. The price of the stay was good. Although the toilet block was small it was clean. One shower and two toilets for the site. Nice play area if you had young kids.

Disliked: Might as well have been on the hard shoulder of the A17, there is road noise but this is another level. I knew it was near so did buy ear plugs but the constant drum, it never subsided. Lorry after lorry. Toilets blocked and lacking toilet paper at times and taps not all working. The first pitch we tried the electric did not work.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Russ, thank you for your review. I’ll address your points one at a time.
Firstly, there is no hard shoulder of the A17 near us. Doing your homework before you arrive is advised as we cannot possibly reduce the road noise but if you had pitched further away from the road it might have helped? We are the closest ones to the road and it does not bother us at all. I suppose it depends on what you’re used to? We cannot guarantee absolute silence however.
Children have been playing in the toilets as they have been unsupervised which has led to toilets blocking up and been stuffed with toilet roll. The tap situation has been rectified and as for the electric not working, it does but it depends on what is being plugged in to it and if it safe to be used on a campsite. This was the problem we had at first. We only have a certain amount of power coming on site and having multiple appliances on at once certainly doesn’t help. We have to remind campers that they will not be able to plug as they do within the home. However, we managed to rectify your power demand.
We actually have 2 toilets and a shower in each side which you overlooked. This is ample and is regularly checked, cleaned and kept fit for purpose.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse. As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events. Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle. Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.
