  • Peaceful 55-acre site on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds
  • Half an hour from the beach at Cleethorpes
  • Two large and well-stocked fishing ponds; bar on site with food
The gentle bob of the float of the water, the drowsy buzz of a passing dragonfly, a flash of blue as a kingfisher darts over the water – sounds pretty idyllic, no? All this can be yours at Watermill Leisure Park, a family-run holiday park on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Anglers have plenty to look forward to here, with roach, perch, rudd and tench among the species in the two well-stocked ponds. Also lurking in the deep are all sorts of carp, including some rumoured to weigh around 20lb. Not into fishing? Panic not. The oak and pine woods around the 55-acre site provide safe havens for lots of wildlife: bring your binoculars, take a seat and see what you can see – kingfishers, owls, woodpeckers and dragonflies are among the regular visitors. For something a bit more active, you can easily join walking and cycling routes directly from the site. If you fancy a pint at the end of the day, you’ll be chuffed to hear there’s a country pub a three-minute amble from the site; it also serves food five evenings a week. For pitchside eats, head to Caistor, a 10-minute drive away, to pick up a takeaway or buy your barbecue bits from the supermarket. Easiest of all, just head to the on-site bar, where homemade pizzas are available from a clay oven at weekends in peak season.

Local attractions

Walkers and cyclists have plenty of choice of routes nearby: directly outside the site, a path leads into the woods and on to longer hiking trails, and the Viking Way starts from the village of Nettleton two miles away. Another good place for a walk is the Far Ings Wildlife Reserve, half an hour's drive away. Along the banks of the Humber estuary there’s lots for birdwatchers in particular, with geese, starlings and swallows among the birds nesting here. It’s also one of the UK’s best strongholds for bittern. If you’d like to get a bird’s-eye view of the forest, take to the trees at Wild Pines Park, 20 minutes away, where you can tackle the high ropes course and fly through the canopy on ziplines. Down on solid ground you can also follow a treasure hunt or have an archery lesson. Life gets even wilder half an hour away at Woodside Wildlife Park, where the inhabitants include tigers, lemurs and various reptiles. Fancy a beach day? It will take you just over half an hour to drive to Cleethorpes.
