  • Peaceful working farm site surrounded by Lincolnshire grazing fields
  • Within easy reach of Newark, Lincoln, Grantham and Nottingham
  • Option of ordering full English or continental breakfasts
Huge spacious pitches and open fields await at this back to basics site in rural Lincolnshire, in a handsomely historic location between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham, and within easy reach of the lights and sights of Nottingham. Adjoined to a working farm, this site is in a peaceful spot and secluded setting, surrounded by countryside a short distance from the River Witham. Rectory Farm is shaded by mature trees and has spacious grassy pitches among a field surrounded by hawthorn hedges. Guests are welcome to choose a pitch under the shade of mature trees or out in the open. The site owners give you the option of ordering full English or continental breakfasts, so no need for camping stove faff in the morning if you'd rather get up and out for your days of sightseeing. On the amenities front, toilets, showers and a washing-up area are all available for guests' use. As this site is on a working farm, there'll often be tractors and trailers trundling up and down the farm track during harvest time in August and September until around 9pm.

Stile primitive grass tent or travel trailer campsite (XL)

Liked: A gem of a small site. A warm welcome, lovely quiet-yet-accessible location in open countryside and on a working farm. The facilities (separate loo and shower) are clean and functional. We'd definitely stay again if in the area. Recommended.

Disliked: Nothing. In fact, we stayed an extra night it was so lovely at this site.

Willow Tree primitive grass tent or travel trailer campsite (large)

Liked: The pitch was large, with plenty of choice. There was a picnic table already there which was really useful.

The pitch is far enough away that you rarely get disturbed by the noise of the farm equipment or the animals.

The Willow Tree pitch is not far at all from the facilities, the bins are clearly marked and recycling is encouraged.

The owners are sweet and very nice people, they leave you alone for the most part as they are busy. If you see them, they will chat to you and we got some advice about the local area.

Our pitch in the back corner was perfectly level, the ground was well maintained too.

Disliked: We were left for 45 mins without response in person or via phone when we first arrived. The owners were elsewhere working, but the number provided wasn’t for a mobile, just a landline (where nobody was in). The owner did come and apologise as soon as they came back.

The toilets and shower are perfectly adequate but they appear to rarely be cleaned. They are full of cobwebs and dirt. We showered regardless and the water was nice and hot, but it was difficult to find anywhere to dry off that was clean enough.

The pitch is next to the road, but it wasn’t very busy, a few cars an hour mostly. If you are extremely sensitive to sound and will be woken up/annoyed by the noise it is worth considering.

This is a working farm, you will hear the pigs having arguments from time to time (or getting on a bit too well). It’s not disturbing from the distance we were at, but again if you were particularly sensitive it is worth considering.

Finally, there was a massive spotlight on one of the far buildings that shone right at our pitch. This was probably the most disturbing thing, as it obstructs the view of the sky, but also shines through the tent. We thought it would turn off, but it was on throughout the night.

Local attractions

Nearby are the British Horological Institute at Upton, with its huge collection of clocks, watches and other timepieces, and Newark Showground, where you can pick up bargainous bits at one of its regular antique fairs. Plenty of history is also over at Lincoln half an hour's drive away – must-sees while you're there include the castle and cathedral, and nearby the National Trust properties of Grantham House and Tattershall Castle are both worthy of a half-day trip. Newark, famed for its starring role in the English Civil War, is another tiptop spot: wander the exhibits of the National Civil War Centre and take the Nottinghamshire Civil War Trail to key locations around the town and several of Nottinghamshire's other historic hotspots. Newark also has a weekly market and regular medieval jousting weekends.
