  • Well-kept and adults-only lodges in peaceful Lincolnshire countryside
  • Gainsborough Old Hall 10 minutes’ drive; Lincoln 25 minutes’ drive
  • Private six-seater hot tubs plus a wildlife pond and fishing on site
When you’re sorely in need of some ‘you’ time well away from the kids and home, a bit of luxury might be very welcome. That’s where Longley’s Retreat comes in… This adults-only hideaway is 10 minutes’ drive from Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, with accommodation in well-equipped and comfortable wooden lodges. Each one comes with TVs and heaters in spacious living areas, modern kitchens with all the essentials in there, bedrooms with towels and sheets supplied, and spotless ensuites. Outside, every lodge has its own private seating area with a six-seater, under-cover hot tub so you can bubble away any aches and pains. On site there is a private pond, where you are welcome to wander to see what you might spot in the wildlife stakes – you should see geese and mallards at least. You can also fish (catch-and-return only) on the water, but please use the site’s equipment for netting and landing. If you fancy time away from the kitchen, the fish and chip shop at Upton (five minutes’ drive) opens on Friday and Saturday evenings, and there’s also a village pub and small shop within 20 minutes’ walk (which requires a short distance along a quiet road).

Local attractions

Lincoln (25 minutes’ drive) could be the first stop on your sightseeing schedule: as well as its medieval castle and cathedral (pop into the latter to see the Wren Library), this historic city has a semi-ruined bishop’s palace to nose around and the excellent Museum of Lincolnshire Life, with eclectic displays of printing presses, armoured tanks and period rooms. There’s most heritage to be absorbed at Gainsborough Old Hall (10 minutes), an early Tudor half-timbered mansion that you can look around accompanied by an audio guide. Try not to miss the exceptional Bassetlaw Museum in Retford (also 10 minutes), where you will discover glassware, silverware, a recreated Victorian shop front and farm implements in an ornate Georgian house. Should you prefer to explore on foot, Idle Valley Nature Reserve (half an hour) has a number of strolls around wetlands and a profusion of wading birds to watch, or from some more serious hiking, make for the undulating hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape (35 minutes).
