  • Adults-only north Lincolnshire touring site for CAMC members only
  • Cleethorpes 20 minutes' drive; half an hour to Hull
  • Three fishing lakes and bait shop on site; lots of wildlife to spot
Fishing fan and/or fond of wildlife? You’ll be in a fab setting at Butterswood Lakes Certificated Location – this adults-only touring park, for Caravan and Motorhome Club members only, is a top spot for both fishing and wildlife spotting in north Lincolnshire. About 10 minutes' drive from Barton-upon-Humber, this secluded site has a fantastic 11 acres of space to its name. There’s just a handful of pitches here, as much of the property has been dedicated to preserving the natural wildlife habitats. Certain areas are off limits to guests in order to conserve peaceful spaces for the water voles, newts and numerous birds that live here (including ducks, owls and kingfishers). Also on site are three fishing lakes packed with carp, rudd, perch, tench and other species to try your luck with – including some weighing over 20lb. There’s full fishing access for guests, with a bait shop on site to make things nice and easy. If you fancy a couple of laidback days of fishing with no need to travel anywhere, this is the place for some of that, for sure… On the other hand, you'll also be in a fine location if you'd like to get out and about a bit. Thornton Abbey is less than a mile away, and next to a train station with services that can whisk you off for a day at the seaside in Cleethorpes. There are several lovely country pubs in the surrounding area for meals and drinks, and you can head into Hull (half an hour's drive) if you're after a more urban outing.

Local attractions

If you can tear yourselves away from the on-site lakes, there's more interest nearby for fishing folk in the form of the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre (20 minutes' drive), telling the story of the town's maritime heyday and offering tours of the Ross Tiger trawler. You can also get to Grimsby on the train, which means you can then sample a couple of craft brews at Docks Beers. Further down the coast, Cleethorpes (20 minutes) is the place for some seaside time, whether you go for a stroll on the sand, a feast of fish and chips or some activity at the boating lake and various watersports providers. Looking west instead, you can cross the Humber Bridge for a day in Hull (half an hour), perhaps wandering through the old town, seeing the fish at The Deep aquarium or stepping back to the past at the Streetlife Museum. Keeping it rural, there are lots of trails, plus golf and a Go Ape course, at Normanby Hall (35 minutes) – you can also visit the Georgian hall, the walled garden and the excellent Rural Life Museum.
