  • Peaceful, no-frills family campsite at Queniborough in Leicestershire
  • National Space Centre 25 minutes’ drive; Rutland Water 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly pitches with a communal firepit; pubs 20 minutes’ walk
Simplicity is what it’s all about at The Nook Campsite, just outside the rural village of Queniborough in Leicestershire. Simple grass pitches mown into a hay field on a small family-run arable farm; simple facilities in the shape of composting loos in wooden cabins at the edge of the field; and lots of space to have simple fun in the outdoors with all the family (and any family dogs too, of course). Sheltered by mature trees and hedgerows, the level camping field has far-reaching views over surrounding countryside. Right in the middle of the site, there’s a communal seating and picnic area where you can cosy up around the firepit and chat with fellow campers – if and when the mood takes you. If you’re not feeling particularly sociable, cook alfresco on the barbecue (bring your own gear please) back at your jumbo-size pitch; otherwise you can make a beeline for the brace of pubs in Queniborough (about 20 minutes’ stroll). Should you need a top up on the grocery front, there’s a large supermarket in neighbouring Syston (10 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Peaceful, back-to-basics site with beautiful views. Guests loved the clean restrooms, fire pits, and bell tent amenities. Friendly owners. Ideal for short stays, though showers would be nice for longer visits. A great outdoor experience.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful setting. Felt safe. Liked the picnic area with hay bales. Plenty of room for our little one to run around. Bonus that at the end of August we were the only ones at the site! Toilets clean and pleasant. You get both a beautiful sunrise and a sunset from the site!

Disliked Many many aeroplanes flying overhead which keeps a light sleeper up. The walk to Queniborough is along a main road and therefore isn’t easy with a child.

Bell tent

Liked Lovely setting for the bell tent. Friendly owners who went above and beyond to help when we realised we'd forgotten our firewood so the kids still got to toast marshmallows.
Bell tent itself was fab, comfy and nice addition of a few boardgames. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. We went to the space centre which was super easy to get to and the kids (4 and 8) loved.

Disliked If we were going to stay longer than a couple of nights I'd want a shower but it was perfect for us for a short stay

Bell tent

Liked Beautiful, peaceful little site in the heart of Leicestershires country side. We stayed in the bell tent with our 3 children and my mother in law stayed in a tent pitched next to us! This site is so quiet and peaceful it's all about being outdoors! 5/6 pitches on the site itself so a lovely little site to go! We had the entire site to ourselves for the weekend it was bliss! The lady who owns the campsite is very welcoming and helpful. We will be coming back.

Disliked Only one toilet.

Local attractions

If you’re after peaceful strolls in pretty countryside, you can wander lakeside in Watermead Country Park (15 minutes’ drive), home to swans, ducks and geese, while Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood Country Park (20 minutes) is another good bet for spotting wildlife, including herds of red and fallow deer. If you prefer a walk with a purpose, there are several golf courses within 15 minutes’ ride. If more activity is demanded, Rutland Water (35 minutes) is home to inflatable obstacle courses at Aqua Park Rutland as well as sailing, windsurfing and kayaking hire and instruction at Rutland Watersports. Younger kids will also enjoy the gentle rollercoasters and waterslides at Twinlakes Park (half an hour). Displays of rockets, satellites and interactive science exhibits at the National Space Centre (25 minutes) should keep most kids happy; there’s a Night Sky Tour available at the on-site planetarium too. If your offspring are more into nature than science, Tropical Birdland (half an hour) has colourful macaws, parrots and bright-pink flamingos in spacious aviaries.
