  • Well-maintained and peaceful park set alongside the River Cam
  • Many country walks nearby
  • Pub site with beer garden
Hurrah, a pub site! And what a nicely named – and nicely placed – one too. Picture this, pub site peeps: Riverside Caravan Park at The George is a peaceful, popular and very friendly park set along the wildlife haven of Gloucestershire's River Cam, with its own old-style family inn serving up home-cooked local nosh and traditional ales and ciders at decent prices (it should also certainly be mentioned that The George has its own steakhouse section and regular steak nights). The park – and pub – is an easy ten minutes from the M5, making it a peachy place to use as a base for exploring Gloucestershire or as a stopover on the way to or from Cornwall and the southwest, and close to countryside walks passing along the river to snap otters, kingfishers, swans and other wildfowl on the smartphone. There's easy access to the A38 to get to other Gloucestershire highlights, like 16 miles of coarse fishing on the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal within three miles and the Forest of Dean eight miles away. And it should certainly also be mentioned that The George has a large beer garden, with plenty of benches for riverside relaxing and looking for those otters and swans… The amenities are roomy and well-maintained and include a family-friendly shower block with easy access, a loo and shower accessible to disabled guests, washing-up facilities in the main shower block, a washing machine and a children's playground.

Liked Always good to stay here the site is easy and clean and tidy and staff very friendly thank you

Disliked We will ask for a pitch away from the stream next time as everytime someone walked past our dogs barked - our problem but would have made our stay more relaxing on the other side :-). Also the group in the two tents who arrived next to us on our last night were very loud until 2am.

Liked A lovely quiet and clean site. We stayed one night on the way down to Devon and liked it so much that we decided to stay on the way back home. Facilities were spotlessly clean. Food at the pub was excellent.

Local attractions

Use this place as a base to get to the best of Gloucestershire and its surrounds, whether you want countryside or city days in the likes of Bristol, Cheltenham and Bath. (It's a safe bet you'd like a day at Cheltenham Racecourse, 20 miles away, too.) Two miles away, the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust's Slimbridge reserve gives juicy chances to see resident ducks, swans and thousands of migratory birds alongside stacks of events like otter feeds, guided walks and canoe safaris. If it's more greenery you're after, several excellent options are an easy drive away: the 22-acre village green at Frampton on Severn, said to be the longest in England, within a five-mile drive; scenic strolls along the River Severn, within four miles; the National Trust's Westbury Court Gardens, seven miles away, and Stroud's hidden valley Painswick Rococo garden eight miles away (be sure to see the snowdrops if you're there in season). Also recommended by the team are Gloucester Docks and the National Waterways Museum, ten miles away; Woodchester Mansion, an odd and unfinished country house surrounded by National Trust parkland (four and half miles), and 11th-century Berkeley Castle (five miles), thought to be the place where poor old Edward Two saw his last day.
