  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes
Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

What customers say

This tidy campground offers lovely views and a quiet vibe for a relaxing escape. Guests rave about the clean, well-equipped facilities, including spotless restrooms and showers. Spacious spots, welcoming owners, and nearby attractions like Bakewell are big pluses. Minor gripes included some road noise and limited dishwashing areas, but most visitors loved it and want to come back.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A really beautiful campsite with stunning views.

Spotless grounds, which were very well maintained.

Very clean shower and toilet facilities.

Exceptionally cute pygmy goats.

Disliked Not being allowed to smuggle a pygmy goat home ;-)

And we wished that we had hired a fire pit as we were extremely jealous of those people who did (rookie error).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely campsite, grass you can actually put pegs in without a kango hammer was a massive win. Facilities were nice and clean and all other areas the same. We stayed next to a lovely family (thanks Gordon, life saver) who borrowed us the cooking stove and gas when I stupidly forgot the connector between said gas and stove doh!

Disliked Absolutely nothing, will be visiting again without a doubt

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We loved the area! The staff were lovely too. We brought our own fire pit but there’s a choice to hire one for £17 per night i’m pretty sure. I went with my partner and another couple. It is a family friendly campsite as there were lots of children playing about. Showers and toilets were lovely and clean. there is a section for drinking water but we didn’t try it so can’t say anything about it. There is also a freezer and fridge you can use but anything you put in there is at your choice and may get stolen (doubt anyone would). There’s also a charging point for phones etc. Very lovely walks and chances to see goats etc.

Disliked The only problem we had is that it stated there were highland cows but it is about a 30min to an hour walk to see them and is very hard to find.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked It was the first time camping for us! We really liked the campsite, we were in the smaller field and the pitch was good and pitchers weren’t to close to each other. We would camp there again.

Disliked Think the toilets could do with a good clean, but I am sure with all the campers it’s hard to keep on top of it.

Local attractions

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
