  • Quiet and dog-friendly countryside break surrounded by footpaths
  • A 25-minute drive from Nottingham and 45 minutes to the Peak District
  • Walk to four pubs in half an hour; drinks and ice cream sold on site
Did someone say a quiet countryside break in darling Derbyshire? Introducing Little Hay Grange Wild Camping, a quiet rural getaway that’s surrounded by country pubs, a web of countryside trails and characterful villages. Being just five miles from the M1, the site is easily accessible, yet far away from the noise of traffic. Your relaxing bubble is in fact surrounded by Derbyshire villages that are sprawling with country pubs - there are four such establishments under half an hour’s walk from base in Ockbrook, all serving some mighty-fine grub, and more a short drive away. If you’re craving a sweet treat or in need of a little caffeine boost, the site runs a cabin that supplies ice cream and hot and cold drinks - just leave your pennies in the honesty box, ta. All that’s left is to find a splendid little patch on site to set about tucking into your findings. Then, set your sights on the network of footpaths that criss-cross the local countryside, accessible directly from the site, or footpaths to local villages. The Peak District National Park is 45 minutes’ drive away if you want to make a day out of hiking over valleys, moorlands and hills. That’s all your walkies sorted for dog owners - Little Hay Grange Wild Camping welcomes dogs on leads, you see. What about takeaways and supermarkets, then? Well, Spondon (10 minutes’ drive) has a big supermarket for any picky eaters and there’s a smaller shop in Borrowash (five minutes) along with takeaways and other shops. Ockbrook also has a local café where guests can nab themselves cake and tea.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful, serene location. On the back of lots of walks and near to some lovely places to eat like the Cowshed. Lots of space between campers. Respectful campers, no rowdiness. Our son loved playing with neighbouring children also camping. Was a big, safe, open space for them to play in. Very friendly owner. Good communication before we arrived with directions. Cute little ‘shop’ with tea, coffee and ice creams available to buy for a small cost (great value!) via cash or online payment. Very well kept toilet and handy sink/washing area.

Disliked I think the site would benefit from being regularly mowed. The grass was quite long and while it didn’t matter too much in the warmer weather, it was a pain in the morning as it was very wet with dew and hard to manage until the sun dried it off.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great walks directly off site. Fabulous views but close to amenities. Plenty of space to pitch (only 15 pitches for the site). Although the site has a gentle slope there are plenty of flatish areas.
Pot washing area.
Honesty shed selling ice cream and drinks was a nice touch.
Fires allowed.

Disliked I can imagine if all pitches were taken the single toilet would not be enough.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Excellent Location! Great views from the top corner of the field. Easy to locate - lovely little wooden hut where you can purchase various items. Felt very secure and safe.

Owner was very informative and advised me of where the best place was to drive onto the field. Field was easy to pitch tent on too, always a bonus.

Toilet was pristine! Handwash basin, handwash and towel were also a lovely touch. Great to have an outdoor sink near the toilet too - don't forget your torch though!

Views from the Field in the morning (and at night) were picturesque - showing off the Great British Countryside. Can't fault this place. Would stay again in a heartbeat - Thank you!
