Love the simplicity of outdoor life but want a bit of shelter for sleeping? Alstonefield Camping Barn, a countryside barn five minutes’ drive from the village of Alstonefield in Derbyshire, could be the place for you. A stay here isn’t a million miles from a retreat – there’s no electricity (wave bye to your Netflix account for your stay), so there are no distractions from the meadow around the barn and the many trails and bridleways that’ll take you through the hills and dales of this part of the Peak District. From the barn door, you can follow trails to Narrowdale, Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale, and on to remote moorland bridleways that experienced mountain bikers can get their teeth into. You can also join the Tissington Trail in nearby Alsop en le Dale or at its starting point in Ashbourne, or you can hire a bike near Waterhouses, 20 minutes' drive away, to explore the Manifold Track (make sure to trek up to the spectacular Thor’s Cave). All such activity is sure to build up an appetite, so feel free to bring along your camping stove to cook in the barn (supermarkets are about 10 minutes' drive away for supplies) then cosy up for a meal in the warm and dry surroundings. If you’d prefer to treat yourself to something more swish one evening, there are tons of restaurants to try within half an hour of Alstonefield. Although there's no shower in the barn, there is a fully plumbed-in toilet and sink for easy ablutions without any need to venture outside.

Local attractions

Add an element of grandeur to your hols with a stop at any one (or all) of the stately homes in the area around Alstonefield Camping Barn – the spectacular Tissington Hall is 10 minutes’ drive away, and the stunning Hardwick Hall, Sudbury Hall (and Museum of Childhood), Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are all within roughly half an hour. If tripping around grand gardens and hallowed halls is a little too sedate for you, there’s plenty nearby to keep you active instead: try horse riding and pony trekking at Northfield Farm or take to Carsington Water for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating and fishing. To keep the kids on side, you might like to hitch a ride on the Churnet Valley Railway, take a trip into Buxton for underground adventures at Poole’s Cavern, or traipse over to Matlock for Gulliver’s Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. Not enough for them? Pile into the car and head to Alton Towers, just over half an hour away, for an adrenaline boost and a couple of thrill rides.
