  • Quiet and spacious site on the edge of the Peak District National Park
  • Ensuite pods each with kitchen, double bed and TV and DVD player
  • Eight miles from Gullivers Kingdom and 10 from Chatsworth House
Stake your claim for a prolonged stay at the spectacular Peak District pod place of Slate House Farm, a small countryside site set on a working farm nine miles from Chesterfield. Although small and never crowded, this lush site has proved rightly popular with guests, who wax lyrical about its vies, its setting, its facilities and its friendly vibe. The site has outstanding views over the Derbyshire countryside and is surrounded by ancient market towns, swathes of country estates and walking, cycling and mountain biking trails for intrepid adventurers. Anglers (fly and coarse) can cast off about a mile away; Matlock is within three and a half miles, and it's but a 20-minute drive from the farm to the heady sightseeing of the Heights of Abraham, where strong-minded sorts can bob about the landscape in a cable car. Slate House Farm is fably set for Peak District family days to suit all flavours too, with famed Chatsworth House within 10 miles and even more famed (to small sorts at least) Gulliver's Kingdom within eight. Alton Towers is just under an hour's drive away. The pods each have an ensuite bathroom, a small and well-equipped kitchen, double beds with mattresses, and a TV and DVD player. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed on site.

What customers say

Pods praised for comfort, amenities, and thoughtful touches. Rural location & friendly hosts are highlights. Farm animals are a hit! Minor issues: small fridges, mattresses, water taste. Not ideal for older kids.

Camping pod

Liked So much! A great location and wonderful, welcoming and friendly hosts. My 11-year-old daughter described it as a ‘magical’ place and I’d have to agree. Beautiful views and great for children to get a taste of rural/farm life. Although it’s so quiet you are also close enough to some lovely village pubs (I’d recommend Sunday lunch at The Kelstedge) and towns like Matlock. The pods had everything we needed for our two night stay - the new owners of the site are aware of some improvements that would benefit the pods further but we found ours to be cosy, comfortable and loved the little touches like the marshmallows (all of which were consumed by the fire :-). A fabulous place. Thank you Toni and family - we hope to be back :-)

Disliked Nothing at all to dislike, but, like other reviewers have mentioned, I’d recommend taking some bottled water.

Camping pod

Liked Nice rural location, the pods were clean and tidy with a handy kitchen with everything you will need to cook including fire pit and BBQ.

Disliked Fridge could do with being bigger had to shop daily which isn’t ideal. Also says sleeps 4 but the beds for kids are tiny one being a fold out mattress so the youngest slept on the floor and couldn’t sleep as was too cold.

From the manager: Hi

Thankyou for your feedback! We are sorry to ear that your child was cold and couldn’t sleep. As the new owners we are currently in the process of changing the kids day beds to more suitable sleeping arrangements.

Kind regards

Camping pod

Liked Beautiful, cosy and quirky pod equipped with everything you could possibly need and more!
The owner and staff are lovely and easy to chat to. Staff are also accepting, supportive and inclusive, they have no issues with us bringing our disabled daughter next time.
The farm is idyllic and it's so peaceful there. A little piece of tranquility only 30 mins from home.
I fell in love with one of Toni's horses "hero" and enjoyed my morning chat and "cuddle" with him!
We loved it that much we are returning in 2 weeks with our 8yr old daughter.

Disliked Having to go home and back to reality!

Camping pod

Liked had what was needed, in a small space, tv was good for evening as weather made it impossible to sit outside. Wifi would have made it better as phone signal was patchy.

Disliked be nice to have a fold up chair to go with table instead of having to sit on bed/bench, but may be difficult as pod is so small. Also the water heater was noisy, especially with the wind as bad as it was coming through the door/window too.

Water also smelt and tasted like metal so had to buy bottled water.

Local attractions

As well as Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers (well, after Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers), kids of a certain trainspotting disposition might like a puff around the National Tramway Museum, set in the period village of Crich Tramway Village. Trams are here to chuff along on, there are woodland walks and a nature trail, and indoors has exhibits on 100 years of tram history as well as the interactive displays of the award-winning Stephenson Discovery Centre. As long as you don't utter the words 'stately home' too soon, kids should also like a day at Chatsworth House, where there's a farmyard and zipwiring, and Bolsover Castle, (30 minutes), the spectacular 17th-century fort with regular kid-friendly events. Somewhat more grownup times can he had at Haddon Hall, also within 30 minutes. You must def meander around the small villages of the Peak District while here too, as each are famed for their own individual thing: have tarts at Bakewell (25 minutes), hone your footballing skills at Ashbourne (40 minutes) and see the spas of Buxton, 45 minutes away.
