  • Small site in the Peak District National Park
  • A short drive from the famed spa town of Buxton
  • A 40-minute drive from Alton Towers; donkey sanctuary next door
Peaceful times in the Peak District National Park are pretty much a given at scenic and small Greystones Nawab Camping and Touring, with its first-rate views over green countryside. But add in proximity (an easy seven miles) to the famed Peak District spa town of Buxton and it's fairly safe to say that holidays of a highly relaxed nature are very much on the cards… Those of a more active disposition (alongside spa days, this is also recommended around these parts) have hiking, walking, cycling, pony trekking, climbing and paragliding all close by, as well as a Go Ape centre within a mile for woodland antics. For family days, the caves of Poole’s Cavern are just outside Buxton, the Peak Wildlife Park is half an hour away and Alton Towers is within 40 minutes. A donkey sanctuary is next door to the site. Greystones Nawab is a grassy and peaceful site in a wildlife haven, and is motorcycle, family and dog friendly. It has showers, three toilets, a washing-up area and charging facilities. Wifi is available near the main house. Please note that the site keeps peacocks and rare-breed chickens.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: donkeys next door were cool, ground was nicely level and there’s some nice walks nearby

Disliked: the toilets were tiny, to the point where if i didn’t straddle the toilet i couldn’t close the door without it smacking my knees, there was some random peacocks that decided to scream everyone awake at 1am and couldn’t find anyone to buy more wood off of for the life of us

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The staff were brilliant. Very helpful and accommodating. On the first night we forgot to bring cash for logs, they kindly allowed us to pay the next day. The grounds were well kept and the ground is good for pitching a tent. It's just 10mins from an Aldi and there's a cracking fish and chips restaurant (best we've had) next to the Aldi. They were very friendly (especially the son). Price was competitive and they were open earlier in the year than other campsites. The donkey sanctuary is literally all around the campsite and it was nice to see them. We went April 25 (outside of half term holiday) and it was really quiet. There was just a couple of other pitches the whole 4 days we were there.

Disliked: Nothing really. There's wasn't much phone signal, but we'd come to unplug so it was a blessing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Campsite was easy to find, owners were friendly and it wasn't very busy. good value for money if viewing as £5 per person per night (3 of us for 2 nights came to £30) place to wash pots and showers available

Disliked: Pitches very close together and noise from busy road next to campsite. dog charge was £10. toilets were portaloos that more often than not didn't have toilet roll and were flooded with let's say water on the floor. Nothing much around, went as a hiking party so had a fair drive to get to locations, left the site all day didn't realise we weren't supposed to leave the unit unattended.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: Just me and my grandson. The pitch was fine and the site is reasonably quiet. Water nearby and basic facilities on site.

Disliked: When the shower was eventually available, after 2 minutes the power tripped and I was left standing in the dark covered in soap. No one seemed to be around to sort it out. Booking in it didn't seem like they had our details.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: The only nice thing about this campsite was the fact it had donkeys next door.

Disliked: Extremely dirty shower/toilet facilities.
We unfortunately had very loud neighbours on the campsite, playing music until 5am.
We did chase this up the following day with the owned/manager which then moved us to another spot which was even closer to them, which didn’t help at all. They didn’t seem to care as they didn’t speak to the other guests and just said unfortunately you do get people like this🙄

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: NOTHING TO LIKE. THE PLACE IS DISGUSTING

Disliked: we booked up at £20 then after we had booked the price had changed to £15 . On arrival we rang the we number on the gate Man said pitch 5 then changed to pitch 1 we have a 5.9m campervan the place is in a terrible state of condition . Hard standing consist of two chalk stone strips where you put your wheels on and only just wide enough. Therefore when getting out of the van you would stand in thick mud like a cattle field . We tried to park as required but couldn’t as kept getting stuck in the mud . Pathway to toilets was like a cattle field deep mud . We decided that this site was more like a cattle field and we chose not to stay here . This shouldn’t be allowed to advertise as a campsite . It’s more of a swamp We only wish we had taken pictures to show others how bad it really is

Local attractions

Buxton (10 to 15 minutes' drive away) has plenty to do for all ages, including tours around its Georgian architecture and ambles around the award-winning Pavilion gardens. Shopping and nightlife are most plentiful around George Street, the Quadrant and Cavendish Arcade; for kids of a small size, a soft play centre is in town. Kids of all sizes should like going underground at Buxton's Poole's Cavern, a limestone cave surrounded by Buxton Country Park. Take a guided tour among the huge chambers of the caves to hear tales of the Stone Age people, Roman soldiers and medieval outlaws who used them; after that and above ground, there are woodland trails to wander, rabbits and woodpeckers to spot and – possibly of more interest to fatigued grownups – a café serving drinks and hot snacks. Another spa town – again possibly of more interest to fatigued grownups – is at Matlock Bath, 20 minutes' drive away.
