  • Basic family-friendly campsite in the Derbyshire Dales
  • Crich Tramway and Matlock Bath within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly site with links to Midshires Way and Cromford Canal walks
Peaceful strolls, Peak District adventures and fab rural scenery are some of what makes Hankin Farm Campsite a peachy holiday base. And peachy it is indeed… this basic, family-friendly site in the Derbyshire Dales has splendid views over Crich Stand and the added bonus of being 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park for those of you who are up for lots of outdoor exploration. This farm is between the villages of Alderwasley and Whatstandwell and 10 minutes' drive from Belper's numerous shops and other amenities, so coffee shops, pubs, takeaways and supermarkets are all well within reach. The nearest railway station is a mile away in Whatstandwell, making it possible to get to Hankin Farm Campsite without a car. Peaceful walks are part of the local area’s charm, including connections to the Midshires Way, the Cromford Canal and Shining Cliff Woods. That isn’t all though, as all sorts of kid-pleasing activities are very close at hand too, including Crich's well-known tramway museum, Matlock Bath's various amusements and theme parks like Gulliver's Kingdom. The roomy and dog-friendly pitches have access to separate male and female showers and toilets, plus a washing-up area. And as long as you use common sense and follow instructions from the site’s staff, barbecues and campfires are permitted on the pitches.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely setting, great value, friendly Derbyshire fatmer owners.
Facilities are basic but they work fine, theres toilets, a washing up area, drinking water and 2 male and 2 female showers.
Basic and clearly on a farm but clean and work. Great value. Field does slope but usually lots of space to find somewhere pretty flat (if in campervan chics maybe a good idea. Great biew over to Crich.

Liked I have been pitching at Hankin Farm for more years than i can remember.
It's a simple place and thats the beauty of hankin farm, facility's simple and all you need, always clean and tidy. The ability to pitch freely set a fire and enjoy the field as you want, I used to come with friends during summer break now I come with my own family on there summer break,
Views are nice and a short walk or drive to wheat ever you need.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Big open field with plenty of options. Useful to bring levellers as there is quite a bit of slant.
Very clean basic amenities at a great price point of £10 for a single camper. Fruits 6 included a great shower, clean bogs and a couple of sinks with washing up liquid and sponges!
Really helpful friendly staff/family.
Access to great walking g and cycling routes in the area. In the words of the terminator....

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful views, clean facilities

Disliked As others have said the field isn't the flattest, but even on a busy bank holiday weekend we found an almost flat bit!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Very very peaceful during the daytime. Got a few hellos which was nice and not as hilly as previous reviews had made out.

Disliked On an evening the site livened up. Even at after midnight there was quite a bit of noise. Unless it was due to where we pitched. WiFi is not included in the site

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely views and walks from the site
Basic site but had everything we needed to a decent standard.
Lots of room to pitch and kids to play Frisbee
Very quiet at night after 10.30pm, even on a bank holiday weekend.
Owners froze our ice packs without issue.

Disliked No nearby shop so bring milk.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Liked the location with easy access to very nice walks. The toilets were basic but kept clean and stocked with paper. The site was fully booked but was not over crowded. They allow dogs and BBQs which was great with the fab weather we had over the weekend.

Disliked Not really a complaint more of a suggestion, but adding another drinking water point at the top of the field would help the campers in that area get easier access.

Local attractions

Plot out the way to the Peak District… will it be fish and chips by the river in Matlock Bath (10 minutes' drive) or taking the cable car to the Heights of Abraham’s underground caverns (10 minutes) that gets your attention first? Gulliver's Kingdom (10 minutes) is just outside the town too for those of you with kids tagging along. Places that bring a little of history to your holiday are easy to find around here. There are period buildings and vintage trams ready for boarding at Crich Tramway (10 minutes), tours and walks around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cromford Mills (10 minutes) and the Nine Ladies (25 minutes) stone circle to see. Belper (10 minutes) is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site – so you'll be well-set to learn more about the Peak District's industrial heritage – and for other interesting little places, Wirksworth (10 minutes) has a lively marketplace, heritage centre and a museum with the bones of old villagers. For those of you with an artistic streak, Denby Pottery Village (15 minutes) runs pottery painting in its craft studio, or you could look inside the farm shop and factory shop to see what goodies are available to take home.
