  • Back to basics site on a peaceful family farm in the Peak District
  • Outdoor activity paradise; walks, climbs and cycle trails from site
  • Two pubs and a tearoom within walking distance of the site
From walking through the Deep Dale valley to pretending you’re on a film set in Chatsworth House, tear whichever piece of the Peak District you please from Wild Camping at Barkerfields Farm. This family-friendly back to basics site on a working farm is well-placed for concocting an action-packed plan in the national park. Leave the car behind if you wish, as the site is something of a walkers' paradise, with lots of footpaths and walking routes all around, plus climbs and cycle rides (with bike hire in the area too). What to do first? Sample a beer or two from the brewery in Thornbridge Hall (two and a half hours' walk)? The gorgeous loop towards Lathkill Dale’s waterfalls (half an hour's walk)? A dally along to the Deep Dale Nature Reserve (three hours and 20 minutes' walk) or the Magpie Mine (10 minutes’ walk) to learn about the industrial heritage? A Bakewell pudding in Bakewell (an hour and a half's walk)? If food is the first thing on your mind, there’s a restaurant near the waterfalls or two local pubs and a tearoom serving breakfast and ice cream in Monyash, 25 minutes’ walk away (that's not forgetting the supermarkets in Bakewell, which you can also drive to in five minutes). If you can't move that far, there are usually home-made cakes and snacks to purchase on site too. As the site is a working farm, there may be a few farm noises from time to time. Kites, drones and games in the sky are not allowed, but there’s plenty of space for fun in the peaceful, level-grounded field (cars are parked in a separate designated area for safety). As well as farm-themed activities on selected dates, there are basic facilities on site, including portable toilets (serviced several times per day) and clean running cold water (for drinking or washing your pots and pans).

Liked Lovely site with great views.
The yurt was really clean and cosy.

Disliked Being close to the portable toilets.

The door was being banged all night.

From the manager: We’re pleased you found it clean and cosy. It’s the first year we’ve had this tent so we’ll take your comments on board and will relocate it further away from the toilets for our next season.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The sight is really flat and we were able to chose where we pitched.
The absolute peace and tranquility and the stunning countryside views. The porta - loos were also really clean and smelt lovely :)
We spoke with the owner who said she kept a maximum of 20 pitches so the site never feels busy. There were only 10 other tents when we were there and only 4 others when we initially arrived :)

Disliked nothing

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you, we do try our best to keep the toilets as clean and fresh smelling as possible and to make sure our guests have an enjoyable stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely quiet campsite, very helpful host and also friendly.

Disliked Really windy, not so good to sleep at night.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I’m sorry it was a bit too windy for you. We call ourselves a wild campsite because we are a pop up campsite and we are open to the elements. However because we don’t have any trees to help block the wind you do get 360 degree stunning views.

A great find for a wild campsite (with toilets!)

Bertie bell tent

Liked Great wild campsite in a beautiful area. It was very quiet when we stayed but probably due to the weather not being great. We stayed in the Bertie Bell tent which was perfect for our needs. Toilets were clean and there’s a sink for washing up etc. Monyash is about a mile away - there’s a good pub serving traditional food - we ate and drank there. Good walks in Lathkill Dale.

Disliked Not a negative but… It’s open to the elements so be prepared.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We liked it all. Owners were friendly and did their best to keep the site clean and tidy. The toilets were the nicest/cleanest portable ones we've used.
The field isn't over run, think there was around 10 campers and everyone got to pick their own spot. Lovely and relaxing, would definitely recommend.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I stayed here with my preschool aged child for three nights. It is a quiet, basic camp, which is why I chose it. The owner left us to it but was easy to contact if necessary. The portaloos were extremely clean.

We would happily return, hopefully with better weather next time!

Not far from Bakewell.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Perfect off grid escape with beautiful views. Bags of space to pitch up. You can use your car to unload and then park a few 100m away or so. Having minimal cars made it perfect for my two young sons to crawl and run about without worry.

Facilities are basic (as advertised) but kept very clean. The owner popped round everyone early evening to offer firewood for sale if needed. We didn’t take this up as the kids were exhausted from the days fun and already in bed but lots of people did take up the offer and it was nice to see everyone with their little campfires.

Disliked Nothing - just don’t expect phone signal or fancy facilities. This was a very peaceful off grid experience.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We’re pleased you enjoyed your stay and like the feeling of the place. We do try to keep it basic as to keep the wild camping feel. We especially try to make it safe for children and pets to play as we are a family friendly campsite.
I’m pleased you found the facilities clean enough to comment on. We really do try to keep them clean and always stocked with loo roll.
Hope you’ll come again next year.

Disliked Road to walk to village is unlit

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It’s a shame that’s you’ve marked us down for something we had no control over : The road.
The road is a country road which often means that they are unlit at night.
We are pleased you enjoyed the village once you got there though.

Local attractions

If you feel like calling into the animal world, Peak Wildlife Park (half an hour's drive) has lemurs, penguins and wallabies. As you’d expect, there’s also plenty of wildlife around the national park and inside the National Trust’s Lyme Park (45 minutes). Down for some rock climbing? Hope Valley Garden Centre’s climbing wall (25 minutes) or The Foundry Climbing Centre (45 minutes) will help you get in some practice. For challenging outdoor walls, Hathersage (25 minutes) is a good spot. Meanwhile, for a traffic-free bike trail through tunnels and limestone valleys, make for the Monsal Trail (10 minutes). Down into the pits… Peak Cavern (35 minutes) has a natural amphitheatre, while Speedwell Cavern (half an hour) has a boat trip into the Bottomless Pit. The Treak Cliff Cavern (35 minutes) is home to the Blue John stone, while the Heights of Abraham (half an hour) has more caverns surrounded by woodlands and gorges (plus cable cars and a playground). And if the kids are looking for a thrill, Alton Towers (35 minutes) and Gulliver’s Kingdom (25 minutes) theme parks are both within easy reach.
