  • Peaceful dog-friendly hillside farm site with level, mowed terraces
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashbourne; 15 minutes to Carsington Water
  • Fire baskets for hire and wood to buy; footpaths through the farm
Thorpe Cloud View Camping is all about the peaceful times under ever-changing skies. You’ll notice the sunsets, starry skies and landscapes are particularly pretty at this five-acre hillside site right outside the Peak District National Park, above the Thorpe Cloud Landmark at Dovedale with footpaths running through the farm. With pitches on level, mowed terraces across a hillside terrain, you’ll be well-positioned to descend on the national park, whether that’s the Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ drive), Ashbourne (10 minutes) or Matlock Bath (20 minutes). It’s peaceful up here, as things feel quite tucked away. However, the hideaway isn’t without its small bits of self-entertainment, as acoustic music is allowed (from gifted musicians only) before quiet time between 10.30pm and 7am and firepits are too – there are fire baskets for hire and wood available to buy from Ed the farmer or you can use your own off-ground braziers. As the site follows a peaceful, back to nature ethos, this isn’t a site for loud music or single-sex groups, but dogs (on a lead) are allowed as long as they can behave around livestock (there are sheep, geese and chickens on site). Entry to the site is down a 500-metre single track. The farmhouse, 200 metres away from the pitches, has an amenities block with showers and toilets (all free) and there's also a standpipe in the meadow. Please note that campervan and vehicle access to the camping meadow is restricted in the low season and dependent on weather conditions. Campervans and other vehicles will have access to a hardstanding/car park area at all times.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Plenty of space for campers, wash facilities available and Ed the farmer was lovely & there to help if needed. Short drive from Dove dale stepping stones & Thorpe Cloud Summit hikes. Even after a cloudy afternoon and Terrential rain, you were able to see the stars at night. Amazing Views.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Stunning views (especially sunset), large pitches with picnic tables, peaceful and private, fire pits for rent and wood for sale, warm showers, clean loos, and of course the hospitality of Ed the farmer, who went above and beyond to accommodate us. We had everything we needed, slept soundly, and were well situated for the places we wanted to explore this weekend. Would recommend to friends and family visiting the Peak District. Cheers Ed!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely quiet spot. Lots of space - didn't see my 'neighbours'! Lovely views and sunset. Fresh water, Friendly welcome.

Disliked The porta-loos - that's an experience I will never forget - they were full and smelly! My pitch was on a slope - might be ok in a caravan but impossible in a tent - I kept rolling to one end in the night. The lower terraces looked flatter.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Fantastic price, Ed the host, clean facilities and a shower!!! Loved it. Each space had a picnic table, can hire a fire pit and buy wood which means you don’t have to take these things. Good size plot for tent and car. Great views. Plenty of places to visit not far way including Carsington water, Dovedale stepping stones. Thank you.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked This site is beautiful. We wanted to find a wild camping spot and this ticks all the boxes but has the basic amenities that you need. If you are looking for a glamping experience, this is not the site for you! The views are incredible and the freedom to have a BBQ and camp fire makes this place perfect. Fires are not permitted in the Peak District National Park but this site sits just beyond the boundary. The owners were friendly and helpful on arrival and really informative when we left the site. I would recommend this little gem to any campers who enjoy a proper back to nature experience.

Local attractions

Historic towns? Terrific trails? Prehistoric sites? Absolutely. For the former, work a visit to the market town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) or the spa village of Matlock Bath (20 minutes) into your itinerary. For the latter, Hob Hurst's House (40 minutes) is a prehistoric burial mound – and just another addition to a long list of historical spots across the Peak District, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), Tissington Hall (15 minutes), Kedleston Hall (25 minutes) and the Crich Tramway Village (half an hour). When it comes to trails, there’s a very splendid selection about. Perhaps a 13-mile cycle on the Tissington Trail (10 minutes) beginning in Ashbourne? The limestone gorge and country park at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes)? The Dovedale (25 minutes) river walk to the Stepping Stones and the Thorpe Cloud? For those who like a paddle or a cycle, Carsington Water (15 minutes) is an attractive candidate. Family-friendly days are bound to be packed with activities there, and the same goes for the family-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom (20 minutes).
