  • Family-friendly farm site in the Chiltern Hills National Landscape
  • LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort 40 minutes’ drive; Thorpe Park 45 minutes
  • Dog-friendly pitches; animal encounters available; barbecues allowed
Fancy taking a breather from daily life and heading to the Buckinghamshire countryside? Make a beeline for the family-owned Penn Meadow Farm, set in 145 acres of the Chiltern Hills National Landscape, where you can set up camp on a dog-friendly, tree-sheltered meadow with spectacular views over fields and forested valleys. Happy to hang out at the farm? The kids will probably love the chance to meet the resident pigs, sheep (with their lambs in spring) and alpacas, as well as Bobby the border collie. There’s plenty to do in the local area, too, with lots of public footpaths going straight from the pitches, red kites to watch soaring overhead and several golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive. If you feel like a foray into London, Marble Arch is just an hour’s drive away, but when your offspring find out that LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort is just 40 minutes in the car, chances are you’ll have no peace until you take them there. Back on site after your daytime expeditions, you’re welcome to have a small campfire in the evening, and the farm owners can supply wood. Alternatively, the site is five minutes’ stroll from Britain’s oldest free house, the half-timbered Royal Standard of England, where you can sample local ales and enjoy delicious roast dinners.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nice easy check in, lovely surroundings. We are local to this place but feel like we have travelled far to get here. Really nice walk through the woods to get to local pub. The is a little kitchenette for people to use which looks very quirky and useful. We were pitched close by the goats which the children loved going over to look out. All in all are nice campsite

Disliked Maybe have another set of toilets the other end of the field, and more shower facilities for when it is busy. The que was very big in the morning

From the manager: Hi Ronan,
Thank you for taking time to leave your feedback, we are so glad you enjoyed the location, value for money, children friendliness and the cleanliness. Our team work very hard to ensure everyone has a lovely stay.

We are a working farm which will situate us on farm roads which we do include on the description of the Farm. I can see from you photo that you were not in the camping field but in the Alpaca Field where they have their barn.

I'm so sorry you did not receive the information you needed before your arrival, on your next visit, follow the track up and then turn left onto the main field where it is set up for camping.

I think this is one of the best sites I've visited.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It was very clean, tidy, spacious, well kept, and they allow a late night check-in! The toilets and showers blocks were nicely presented. They have a communal area which has gas, water, a fridge, kettle, etc and this was a nice touch. The bins were close by and big. The staff were friendly too.

Disliked When arriving at night, there are no visible instructions on how the site works, how to check-in or anything really. I circled the site 3 times looking for some type of instruction/confirmation. Eventually a member of staff saw me.

It would be better of they used clear, white unmistakable signs on the site, maybe with fluorescent tape around them or something.

I'd personally write something like;

"You have arrived at Penn Meadow! The site has a circular road system. Please drive through the gate and turn right.

If you have arrived after 10pm, please feel free to pitch up, but leave 5m space around you. We will see you in the morning.

The showers are at the top of the hill. Please feel free to use the kettle and facilities in the middle of the site.

Enjoy your stay."

Anyway, in the morning, it all became clearer. There's a wooden structure to the right of the gate that says "check-in here".

From the manager: HI Anthony,

Im so sorry you did not receive instructions for arrival, these should have been sent to you automatically via Hipcamp. I will contact them to see what has happened as this is a third party booking system.

Typically we do not have arrival after 9pm due to having a volume down from 10pm.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and enjoyed the facilities on site. The entire team really love what they do and we are grateful that this came across on your stay.

An excellent stay. We cannot wait to visit again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Everything.
We had the most wonderful time in this beautiful setting.
The facilities such as the camp kitchen and toilets/ showers made our stay all the more comfortable.
The animals on the farm were wonderful. Our children particularly loved the goats and our little boy (who is usually nervous around dogs) fell in love with the fantastic working dogs on site.
It was chilled and our whole family felt a sense of total freedom during our stay.
Every member of staff were most kind and helpful.
A big thank you from us all.

Disliked Nothing at all

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: HI Kimberley!
Thank you so much for taking time to leave such lovely feedback and brilliant photos!! I think the goat in the photo is Author, the two pigs are Dolly and Dotty and the baby alpaca is Marshmallow, the others do not currently have names.
The dogs are so used to children on site and have magic powers I'm sure, I hope your son can feel a little more confident around dogs now.
We hope to welcome you back very soon!

Local attractions

Surrounded by ancient woodland, National Trust - Hughenden (20 minutes’ drive) was the country home of Victorian prime minister Benjamin Disraeli and an RAF nerve centre during World War II. Check out the art collection and library inside the red-brick mansion, then take a stroll through the manicured gardens, with their pristinely maintained paths. See how our ancestors (both remote and recent) lived at Chiltern Open Air Museum (20 minutes), where reconstructed historic buildings range from an Iron Age roundhouse with mud walls and a thatched roof, to a 16th-century oak-framed barn, as well as Victorian structures and wartime prefabricated huts. Children will think they’ve hit the jackpot when they realise it’s not just LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort that’s within fairly easy reach from the site, but also Thorpe Park Resort (45 minutes), with its thrill rides (such as Nemesis Inferno, with an inverted vertical loop) and Chessington World of Adventures (one hour), which includes a zoo.
