  • Small family-run glampsite in woodland, 45 minutes’ drive from London
  • A 10-minute drive to Highclere Castle; five minutes to Newbury
  • Private facilities with hot showers, firepit and under-cover areas
Set in 10 acres of private and ancient woodland on the Hampshire-Berkshire border, Hollington Park Glamping is just 45 minutes’ drive from London and 10 minutes from historic Highclere Castle. The glamping pitches are near to the market town of Newbury in Henry VIII’s former hunting grounds. Each pitch has a cooking station kitted out with a gas stove and barbecue. Crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, barbecue tools, tea, coffee, sugar and milk are provided, along with bedding and towels. Right next door to your pitch, you have exclusive-use showers with piping hot water, a basin and toilet. There is also a private outdoor deck with a covered seating area and a brick-built firepit. While it's clear that the glampsite has plenty to make any self-catering stay comfy, it also stays true to the traditional camping vibe by drawing guests outside with outdoor areas, a lovely woodland and the aforementioned outdoor cooking facilities, firepits and bathrooms. The site is spacious, so group bookings are also welcome. There are also masses to do round and about, from visiting historic sites to farm parks and museums, discovering spectacular countryside walks and enjoying local pubs – there are three highly recommended choices within walking distance.

Route directions

The site can be a little tricky to find, satnavs often take you down the wrong track so watch out for that. If your satnav tries to take you down a small track before the fork to Hollington, please ignore it. The track is for tractors only and you are likely to get stuck. It is also private.

Local attractions

The market town of Newbury has a wealth of indie shops, bars and pubs as well as historic buildings and the manicured Victoria Park, which has a boating lake. Woolton Hill (both five minutes’ drive) hosts an excellent market (last Saturday of every month), while Hungerford (20 minutes) is full of antique emporiums. The Bombay Sapphire distillery (20 minutes) offers tours daily – best to book in advance. And of course there’s magnificent Highclere Castle (10 minutes), open for tours in July and August – outside these months, you’ll need to check ahead for specific dates. If you’re staying with kids, there are zipwires and crazy golf at Finkley Down Farm (25 minutes) and raptor flying shows at the Hawk Conservancy (half an hour). Four Kingdoms Adventure Park and Family Farm (15 minutes) also offers animal encounters and play zones. Fancy a day at the beach? The south coast is only an hour’s drive away. For many people, however, it’s walking and cycling that make the North Wessex Downs so popular. Climb Beacon Hill (10 minutes) or wander across famous Watership Down (15 minutes). Newbury itself sits alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal, where you can follow scenic and gentle walks along the towpath.
