  • Back to basics site on a stable yard in Bedfordshire
  • Half an hour’s walk from Harrold Odell Country Park for canoeing
  • Pubs, café and shop nearby
Take a stop off an ancient green lane and slot yourself away in Piper’s Campsite in the village of Carlton. This peaceful family-friendly site is adjacent to what was once an old highway, now a sweet country lane, and opens up into grazing pastures set in a small, private stable yard. Leave the mischief up to the pygmy goats and their feathery chicken friends while you unwind with views over the sublime Bedfordshire countryside and grazing horses around the site. If the green spaces are calling your name, muck in from footpaths surrounding the site. Walk alongside the river Great Ouse to the Harrold Odell Country Park in half an hour (also a five-minute drive), where you can launch a canoe or kayak and paddle downstream (for paddleboarding, head to Felmersham, just a 10-minute drive). If you’re after some downtime, this site will take you nicely back to basics. There’s a portable toilet and drinking water on site and guests can charge up gadgets in the barn. Outside of the site, sip on local ales and fill up on food at two village pubs within 15 minutes’ walk of the site, including cosy beer gardens. There’s a shop and a café here too if you want snacks.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: It was quiet and the location was nice, with a reasonable view from the top of the field. Portaloo was stocked.

Disliked: Poor communication on arrival, we had to wait about 40 mins to get hold of someone, one of the contact numbers didn't work. It turned out we were OK to go in without them there, so a simple sign or an update to the T's & C's would have helped us know that.
Grass not maintained and was hard to do any activities with the kids on, and pitch areas were a little bumpy. Don't think we will be returning.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: A simple but perfectly lovely site. Lisa and her family were welcoming and even invited us to her family gathering! If you're looking for bells and whistles then this isn't for you. If you're looking for a great place to stay with a welcome with open arms then it's right up your street! On the revisit list, for sure!

Disliked: It's a field with a toilet and a tap. If you want more luxuries than that then it's not for you. Just means there's more space for when we return!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lisa was fabulous, the campsite is wonderful and everything we needed for an evening of camping. The goats, chickens and horses were lovely to be around and were the highlight of my son’s trip, Lisa even let us feed them.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Good location, nice and quiet but close enough to main roads to facilitate travel. Facilities basic, but that is in the description. Host was really lovely, introduced me to her horses and even opened the gate for me in the rain!

Local attractions

Dive into the deep end with wakeboarding or open water swimming on the lakes at Box End Park (a 15-minute drive). For those who are a little ninja-like, there’s also an over-the-water obstacle course and an aqua park for kids (or adults) to get stuck into. Stanwick Lakes (half an hour) is another good stop for children’s activities, including horse riding, fishing and pleasant lakeside walks. If you’re after some indoor activities, Milton Keynes (half an hour) is a good port of call. The Snozone has winter sports and elsewhere there’s indoor go-karting or climbing, if you’re willing to give them a go. Delve into traditional English heritage with a visit to Turvey House (a five-minute drive), a less-than-discreet 18th-century manor house. Compare the gardens to the grounds at Castle Ashby (20 minutes). The gardens here are so large there’s a nature trail, secret butterfly garden and Italian orangery. Elsewhere, learn about World War II codebreakers at the spacious Bletchley Park (35 minutes).
