Here’s a rare opportunity indeed – at Wild Horse Mountain View, you can wild camp on a 1.7-acre waterfront property overlooking the 1,462-acre Sanchez Reservoir State Wildlife Area in Colorado. It’s hard to imagine a less stressed environment to wake up to on your wild pitch as you walk down to the lake with your morning coffee.
There’s plenty to keep you busy on active days in the bracing fresh air: launch your boat on the waters of the pristine reservoir, take the family fishing for northern pike, trout and walleye along the shoreline or go hiking in the surrounding mountains. If you’d rather hang out at your tent wildlife watching, wild mustangs roam the area freely, as well as mule deer, elk and pronghorn.
Access to the pitches is easy as the road is well-maintained by the county. The local towns of San Luis (25 minutes), Fort Garland (45 minutes), Blanca (50 minutes) and Alamosa (an hour) are lively shopping and dining hubs, and you can also learn about regional history at their museums and cultural centres.

- Swimming in the lake is not allowed.
- There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
- Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.
