When you have a yen to really, really get out into the wilderness, to camp in forest with a backdrop of forest-clad peaks, it’s time to head for Nederhögen Vildmarkscenter, a campsite in mountain foothills 15 minutes’ drive from Jämtland’s lakeside village of Rätan.
The level camping ground is on gravel and sheltered by a mixture of mature trees. It’s so peaceful that you’ll hear little else except birdsong… and if you’re lucky you might just spot a moose, fox, reindeer, deer or even a rare bear or lynx fitting through the forest.
A whole bunch of facilities make life at Nederhögen Vildmarkscenter very pleasant indeed, from modern shower facilities to a handy summer barbecue hut and firepit where you can grill burgers and make bread. There’s a restaurant for those days when you just don’t relish the idea of alfresco cooking, a play area for kids, a games room for teens and a sauna where everyone can steam away any aches and pains.
Every season has its own vibe: snow and alpine sports in winter, a carpet of flowers and a myriad of birds in spring. Summer brings warm temperatures and life moves outside, while in autumn you can forage for lingonberries, blueberries and cloudberries among trees with leaves turned yellow, red and orange.

Power optional gravel and concrete site
Liked: Sehr nette Betreiber des Platzes, alles was man benötigt ist in der Nähe der Stellplätze vorhanden. Duschen und WC waren sauber und in einem guten Zustand (Hauptgebäude). Wer frühstücken möchte kann dies ebenfalls im Hauptgebäude tuen, es gab ein super Angebot und noch nettere Gespräche und Informationen.
Es war ein schöner Aufenthalt und Rentiere habe ich bei der Abfahrt auch noch zu sehen bekommen.

Local attractions
Finding forest hikes? No bother. Lace up your boots and set off into the trees directly from the site. Mountain-biking trails also start directly from the site if you prefer to do your adventuring with the help of two robust wheels. When winter swoops in, the campsite can also arrange cross-country skiing and snow-scooter tours.
If you don’t mind going a little further out for hikes, the Röjan nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) is a nice spot for a gentle stroll and wildlife watching. Those who want to arrange their own intrepid ski adventures during the winter can also map out the routes to Vemdalsskalet (half an hour) and Björnrike (50 minutes).
An afternoon by the water is also easy to come by in this area. There are local fishing lakes (15 minutes), for starters. There is also a lakeside beach in Rätan (15 minutes) if you feel like you're due for a proper bit of unwinding, perhaps with the company of a page-turner or picnic.
