Local attractions

Greymouth and the surrounding district offer activities such as Shantytown (a replica 19th century gold town), white water and cave rafting, bush walks, 4-wheel biking, mountain biking, coastal and lake fishing, brewery tours, arts and crafts and scenic flights. Greenstone, or jade, is another natural treasure found on the West Coast. It is crafted into jewellery and other artworks which can be bought at local outlets. Greymouth Kiwi Holiday Park and Motels is an ideal place to base yourself to explore the West Coast, from the pancake rocks of Punakaiki to the north to the glaciers to the south. There is something for everyone! The West Coast offers you a variety of activities and events and we have listed some of these for your information: PUNAKAIKI – 40 minute drive north. Punakaiki is famous for The Pancake Rocks. WEST COAST WILDERNESS TRAIL – 1 minute walk, A series of tracks carved through the wilderness by pioneering gold rush miners MONTEITH’S BREWERY – 5 minute drive north, A visit to the Monteith’s Brewing Company is a must for beer lovers. SHANTYTOWN – 5 minute drive south, A recreated gold-rush village, a visit to Shantytown includes a ride on a vintage steam train. ON YER BIKE – 10 minute drive north, The West Coast may have a reputation for high rainfall – (2.5 – 3 m of rain every year!), but because of all that water, On Yer Bike off-road and quad biking adventure tracks take you through masses of puddles, mud and a thriving privately owned rainforest. KNIFEMAKING – 30 minute drive north, Forge your own blade from red hot steel, and complete your knife with native timber handle, brass bolsters and pins.
