  • Adults-only site in the rural De Stippelberg area
  • In the green region De Peel; walking and cycling routes from the site
  • Firepits and barbecues on site; dogs welcome
Wake up surrounded by blossoms, butterfly bushes and an assortment of fields, maize and fruit trees. There’s plenty of peace and quiet to go around at the adults-only Minicamping Mortels Buiten just outside of De Mortel in rural Gemert-Bakel. With woods surrounding the site, falcons often hanging in the air and other sound effects including chirping crickets, bats, crowing roosters and pecking woodpeckers, it's a real wildlife haven… At these pitches between the fields, maize and apple, cherry, pear and plum trees, guests have access to an amenities block with showers and toilets. In the evening, you're welcome to light up a barbecue or firepit to cook your meal (fires need to be kept in a firepit, which are available on site). And if you're ever in need of something to tide you over to the next meal, make use of the site's bread service and the snacks that they have for sale. The dog-friendly site is in the middle of De Peel, a region with lots of greenery and wetlands. That means that there is plenty of scope for activities such as bike rides or hikes in the adjacent De Stippelberg nature reserve, which has forests, heath and fens, as well as doing the walking and cycling routes that begin directly from the site. When you fancy a laidback day out, track down a cosy terrace for a bite to eat or a drink in one of the local villages… Gemert, Bakel, Aarle-Rixtel, Deurne, Beek en Donk and Helmond are within 20 minutes’ drive of the site and have many old, scenic streets. Otherwise, visit Eindhoven (half an hour’s drive) or cross over the German or Belgium border for some sightseeing and more bike rides. Local markets selling tasty regional products are also within a short drive of the site.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Fantastic little site, very clean, very spacious when we stayed. The owners were very welcoming , nothing was too much trouble even helping to start our little BBQ with a blow torch to cook our evening meal. Very relaxing after our long ride on the motorbike. Would definately recommend and will stay again if in the area.

Disliked: Next doors cockerel had a lie on our first morning but day two woke up with the sunshine at 05.30.

Local attractions

With the Netherlands’ fifth-largest city half an hour’s drive away, sightseeing is easy to do. Eindhoven has a collection of museums, including the Van Abbemuseum (35 minutes’ drive) with heaps of contemporary art and the PreHistorisch Dorp (35 minutes), an exciting prehistoric and medieval village that opens its doors in high season. There are city zoos in Eindhoven, including Zoo Veldhoven (40 minutes) and Dierenrijk (half an hour), but more unusual wildlife can be tracked down at the Vlindersafari (35 minutes’ walk) butterfly safari. With Het Zwarte Water (35 minutes’ walk) for a taste of horse riding, you won’t run short on animal-based activities within walking distance of the site. Then, there are the castles too… Kasteel Helmond (20 minutes' drive) is the largest moated in the Netherlands and a sight to behold, while Kasteel van Asten (25 minutes) has a history of wars and witch hunts; just book in a visit and pair it with a trip to the splendid Saturday morning market in the centre of Helmond.
