- Well-maintained site five minutes’ drive from Nieuw-Bergen
- Reindersmeer lake five minutes’ drive; Overloon 25 minutes
- Dogs welcome; less than two kilometres from Leukermeer swimming lake
In the countryside of Limburg province, in the south-eastern corner of the Netherlands, is Camping Halve Maan (literally, ‘half-moon’). This leafy site with level grassy pitches sits right on the edge of the National Park De Maasduinen, so it gets pretty dark skies (and good stargazing), but if you’re tempted to howl at the (half-) moon, please don’t: this is a small, quiet spot for chilling and relaxing.
Take your pick between an exposed and a shaded pitch, then drive right up to it. All pitches come with electric hook-up, and they are well spaced from one another, creating a feeling of privacy.
The local highlight is, of course, De Maasduinen, an area of forests, sand dunes and heathland that’s anchored by Reindersmeer (five minutes’ drive, a 10-minute bike ride or a half-hour walk). This lake is a popular spot for hiking, biking and horse-riding, and your dog (who should be kept on a lead here) should also enjoy exploring the surrounding network of forested trails. Swimming is not allowed in Reindersmeer, but keen swimmers can make their way to nearby Leukermeer (less than two kilometres away).
Back on site, a large covered terrace with a fireplace is a great spot to relax after a day of exploring. Other amenities include a pristinely maintained toilet block with showers, and a washing-up area. The site sits just off the N271 road, which leads to Nieuw-Bergen (five minutes’ drive), with several supermarkets, shops and restaurants.

Local attractions
Natuurgebied Heukelomsebeek (five minutes’ drive) is a nature reserve that turns a pretty mauve colour in the summer, when it is carpeted with wild cuckoo flowers. For more natural colour, head to De Hamert estate (10 minutes), where the heathland blossoms into vivid purples in late summer; you might also spot woodpeckers, cranes and migratory birds here.
Overloon (25 minutes) might be small, but it has a couple of big hitters when it comes to sightseeing. The Overloon War Museum focuses on World War II, with such exhibits as military vehicles and the not-quite-reconstructed wreckage of a British Lancaster bomber. Residents at ZooParc Overloon include big cats, primates and colourful birds.
The Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo (half an hour) houses interesting collections, ranging from Japanese woodcuts to 20th-century Expressionist art, while the Limburgs Museum runs hands-on activities for children as well as displaying local artefacts dating as far back as Roman times.
