General view of the site

  • Peaceful and family-friendly Tuscan campsite in Val di Farma woodland
  • Petriolo Thermal Baths 15 minutes’ drive and Siena half an hour
  • Tree-shaded pitches with sports facilities and a communal barbecue
Longing for the cultural sights of Tuscany but not so keen on urban stays? If you’d rather be a country mouse, book in at AgriCampeggio Le Fontanelle, a peaceful haven overlooking the remote Val di Farma, only 20 minutes’ drive from San Galgano Abbey or half an hour from Siena. Found on farmland 500 metres above sea level, the site is shaded by the canopy of oak, chestnut and holm oak trees still inhabited by squirrels, roe deer and wild boar. A handful of pitches sit among the trees, with upcycled wooden picnic tables and seating scattered around, plus a communal barbecue for grilling alfresco. Quiet this spot may well be, but there’s masses to keep everyone occupied on site. Kids can strike out across the slackline, practise their archery or play ping-pong under the trees, there are volleyball and pétanque courts for rousing family matches, and plenty of walking and cycling options in the rural hinterland. The owners ask only that you respect the silence of the forest and do not disturb the animals or your fellow guests, especially after dark.

Local attractions

So, first stop may be the scallop-shaped Piazza del Campo, sublime artworks in the Palazzo Pubblico and the striking marble interior of the black-and-white striped Duomo at Siena (half an hour’s drive), where you can also climb up Torre del Mangia for views over the Tuscan hills. The photogenic remains of Gothic-style San Galgano Abbey (20 minutes) should also be on everyone’s bucket list. If the kids are keen for a day at the seaside, there are several sandy Tyrrhenian Sea options in the Parco Regionale della Maremma (40 minutes), which is also home to wild cattle and horses. Still in the park, the spectacular town of Grosseto (45 minutes) has well-preserved medieval walls and Massa Marittima (50 minutes) is dominated by its stunning 14th-century cathedral. When it’s time for some serious chilling after all the sightseeing, book a treatment or soak up the medicinal properties of the waters at Petriolo Thermal Baths (15 minutes).
