  • Adults-only site among expansive lavender fields in the Tuscan hills
  • Bibbiena five minutes’ drive; Arezzo 45 minutes
  • Massages; cycle hire; spectacular valley views from a large terrace
Is your mental image of Tuscany all about gentle hills covered with vineyards? Well, with just the tiniest tweak (replace the vineyards with fields of colourful lavender), your mental image can become a reality at La Lavanda di Poppi. This adults-only site halfway between the towns of Poppi and Bibbiena (five minutes’ drive to either) sits in the Casentino valley, which is crossed by the river Arno (better known for flowing through Florence), in the eastern reaches of the region. This is a luxury retreat: your accommodation is a wooden structure with a double bed and a large window with views all the way to Poppi (you might be able to see the castle on clear days). As befits a luxury site, the cabin comes with its own bathroom (with shower) and kitchenette, plus additional touches like air conditioning and a large terrace with spectacular views of the valley and the Apennine mountains beyond. Oh, and massages can be arranged. An exploration of the site might take you past buzzing beehives or through the lavender fields, planted with 18,000 plants producing fragrant essential oils. If you wish to venture further, hire a bike on site and head to the riverside Lungarno cycle path (10 minutes’ bike ride), then on to Bibbiena (20 minutes by bike) to check out its medieval town centre. You’re pretty far from the seaside here, but if you fancy a dip on a summer’s day, the river Corsalone (half an hour by bike) forms a series of inviting natural pools.

Local attractions

A restored 19th-century woollen mill in Stia (20 minutes’ drive) houses the Museum of the Art of Wool Luigi Lombard Foundation, with hands-on exhibits illustrating the local textile culture. The foundation also runs interesting workshops ranging from weaving to macramé knotting, and from spinning to needle felting. The Franciscan Sanctuary at La Verna (40 minutes) is where St Francis of Assisi received his stigmata during a prayer retreat in 1224. Glazed terracotta works by Renaissance sculptor Andrea della Robbia decorate the sanctuary, while a museum on site displays illuminated books and other artworks. In Arezzo (45 minutes), the Basilica di San Francesco is renowned for a 15th-century cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca. There is more Renaissance art in the cathedral, with its slender belltower. At the back of the cathedral, the Passeggio del Prato is a top spot for a walk in the shade.
