  • Static caravans at a peaceful site on the western shore of Lake Garda
  • Paper museum 10 minutes’ drive; Vittoriale degli Italiani 15 minutes
  • Direct beach access; playground and fitness area; cycle hire
On the Lombard (or western) shore of Lake Garda, surrounded by a spectacular landscape of forested mountains and valleys, is the town of Toscolano Maderno. And right by the lake (and, indeed, with direct access to a pebbly beach) is Villaggio Turistico Maderno. Motor vehicles are not allowed within the site, which ensures a blissfully peaceful vibe. If you’re travelling with heavy bags and cumbersome watersports equipment, the staff are on hand to transport your belongings from the secure car park (about 400 metres from the entrance, and for which there is a daily fee) to your static caravan. After that, all that’s left for you to do is embrace the ‘dolce far niente’ lifestyle and relax on a lakeside sunlounger. Or not – as the case may be, for this is a popular centre for windsurfing, canoeing and other watersports (there’s a sailing school a 10-minute walk away). Active types can also head inland to explore mountain-biking and hiking trails leading to elevated spots with views across the lake and all the way to the Veneto shore. For a family-friendly activity, you might want to take advantage of the on-site cycle hire and pedal along the waterfront, stopping at small bars for an ice cream or a cold beer. The site also has its own snack bar, as well as a small outdoor gym where you can burn off any extra calories, plus a playground. There are several supermarkets and assorted restaurants and pizzerias within a five-minute drive of the site (or a 15-minute walk).

Local attractions

In the Middle Ages, the area along the river Toscolano was so renowned for its paper factories that it became known as Valle delle Cartiere (Paper Mill Valley). A former paper mill now houses the Museo della Carta (10 minutes’ drive), with displays on the history and artisanal production of paper, and rare volumes printed here in the early 16th century. There are splendid lake views from the Vittoriale degli Italiani (15 minutes), an elegant estate built by Gabriele D’Annunzio, famed for his poetry and for stunts like the Flight over Vienna during World War I. The site includes the poet’s mausoleum, several museums and extensive landscaped gardens, including a lemon grove. Take a ferry from Toscolano Maderno across the lake to Torri del Benaco (half an hour), where the crenellated Castello Scaligero houses an ethnographic museum with displays on local industries – from boat building and fishing, to olive growing and pressing.
