Views of Lake Garda, a restaurant dishing up the tastiest Italian grub and super-spacious plots all come together rather nicely at Campeggio Giglio, a strikingly scenic high-altitude site that welcomes friends, families and pets. Set in the hills that skirt the Lombardy side of Lake Garda, Campeggio Giglio is in the quiet village of Navazzo di Gargnano, a scenic spot around 500 metres above sea level. The pitch layout here takes full advantage of the site's hillside location, with the plots and common areas looking out onto forested mountains and the lovely lake below. When you're not daydreaming while gazing out over all those blues and greens, it's easy enough to step out and explore the surrounding area. Zigzagging your way down the hillside by car, you can expect to reach Lake Garda in about 15 minutes; there's also a regular bus service that can get you from A to B (with B being the lovely harbour town of Gargnano) in roughly half an hour. Back at base, facilities include toilets, hot showers, washing machines and a barbecue area, plus optional site-organised extras like a visiting hairdresser, bike hire, getting out on horseback with a local riding stables and deliveries of fresh bread. The main event, though, is the traditional trattoria-style restaurant, where you can dine on comforting country-style hot dishes or sample a selection of tasty cold cuts.

Liked: The view as I was on a mountain side looking over the Lake and snow capped mountains. It was warm, sunlit and the foods and drinks were gaspingly refreshing. Good helpful staff and good clean facilities.

Disliked: As a satnav doesn’t understand heights with levels, found camp higher up by 2km, but that’s not the camps fault

Liked: Am liebsten wurde ich schreiben, dass alles ziemlich schlecht war... nur um nächstes Jahr wieder einen Platz zu bekommen ;) aber ich muss einfach sagen, sehr schöner Platz, alles sauber, sehr freundliches Personal, leckeres Restaurant. Alles sehr grün! Wundervoller Ausblick mit dem richtigen Stellplatz. Wir kommen gerne wieder.

Disliked: Eher nichts für große Wohnmobile oder Anhänger. Enge Zufahrt und Wendemöglichkeit. Enge Serpentinenauffahrt.

Local attractions

With mile upon mile of crystal-clear water lapping at its banks, Lake Garda (15 minutes' drive) is a classic spot for lazing around. If you don't want to lose sight of Italy's largest lake, take yourself off for a round at Golf Bogliaco (20 minutes) or peruse the grand gardens of Villa Bettoni (15 minutes) before heading to Gargnano's ferry port (15 minutes) and sailing off to villages across the water in Veneto. While Lake Garda may be the biggest draw around these parts, you'd be silly to sideline other (quieter) lakes like Lago di Valvestino (15 minutes) and Lago d'Idro (40 minutes). It's also well worth exploring some of the local bike and hiking trails; put aside a few hours and set out from site for a jaunt to San Valentino hermitage, or drive 40 minutes to Monte Stino for rambles full of nature and seclusion. If you want a change of scene, urban outings to Brescia (an hour) should have a lot to please your travel tribe, whether they're in the mood for snapping its pretty piazzas and churches or rummaging for bargains in weekly markets.
